Anthony Joseph has confirmed some more good news for Celtic after it broke yesterday that Martin O'Neill would be given the permanent role.
News broke yesterday that Celtic were going to appoint Martin O'Neill as their permanent manager after his success last season in an interim role. The Northern Irishman had been out of management for more than half-a-decade when the call came from the Hoops to salvage their campaign.
Well, he certainly had not forgotten winning. He guided a weak Celtic squad to a Premiership and Scottish Cup double. And if not for the failed Wilfried Nancy experience, which lasted all of 33 days, it could have easily been a treble under O'Neill.
That is what the Hoops should be aiming for going into next season. In the eyes of many, this could have been the perfect ending to O'Neill's managerial career.
Especially considering the manner in which the league title was won, it could not have ended any better. But O'Neill has chosen to continue on. Perhaps he wants to win another treble. Maybe he has his eye on a European run. Possibly he has just gotten the hunger back to manage in competitive football.
Whichever it is, Celtic fans are happy. And there is further news for them to be delighted as it looks like O'Neill will be joined by familiar faces in the dugout.
According to a report from Anthony Joseph in Sky Sports, O'Neill is expected to be joined by his current backroom team of assistant Shaun Maloney, as well as coaches Mark Fotheringham and Gavin Strachan.
The importance of the backroom team cannot be overlooked. They were instrumental in turning the season around as well.
O'Neill himself has admitted that he has needed their help when it comes to the tactical side of things in modern football.
So, it is great news that the club are set to retain them as well. There had been rumours that Maloney could be moved into a more senior position in a behind-the-scenes role but it looks like that is going to be postponed.
Now, with the manager and coaching team picked out, the focus should turn towards the summer transfer window.
Celtic were nowhere near their usual standards, even if they won the double last season. They need to improve.
At the same time, there are a lot of key players who could leave, even if the club want to hold on to them. So, they will need to be replaced with similar quality and ensure that the squad is not weakened further, which had seemed to be the case during Brendan Rodgers' run.
