It looks like Celtic are set to push to sign one of the best players in Scotland this summer.

Celtic have plenty of reasons to be happy right now. They clinched the Premiership title at the weekend with a win over league leaders Hearts in the final matchday of the campaign. This was a thriller of a title race but there was no twist at the end of this story. The champions were the ones you would have expected coming into the campaign.

They will also play in the Scottish Cup final against Dunfermline Athletic this weekend. It is most likely going to be Martin O'Neill's last game as a manager. It is appropriate that it takes place against a team managed by Neil Lennon, someone he worked with for a decade at Celtic and Leicester City.

As far as endings go, this is a fairytale for O'Neill. Let's see if he can say goodbye with one last trophy.

In the long run, Celtic cannot be content with how things have turned out for them this season. The performance levels have been far from ideal. Just compare it to the previous campaign and it is easy to see how much they have regressed with a short span on time.

Last season, Celtic had 92 points. This time, they managed 82. That is 10 less than last time around and only five more than what they had managed in the 20/21 campaign.

They have been very poor in front of goal as well, scoring just 73 times. Last season, they scored 112 goals. That is a difference of a staggering 39 goals!

One of the easiest ways to make sure that Celtic improve next season is by signing quality players in the summer transfer window. And it looks like they have one of the Scottish Premiership's finest on their radar.

According to Football Insider, Elijah Just has emerged as a leading transfer target for Celtic. They are set to accelerate their plans to bolster their squad this summer.

Mick Brown said regarding the situation: “Elijah Just is exactly the type of player Celtic are looking at.

“It’s difficult for clubs in Scotland to find players, it’s not like in the Premier League where you can go and get anybody for anywhere with the money involved.

“Celtic need to use their budget wisely, and signing the best players in Scotland is the most reliable way to do that, because you know how they perform in the league.

“A lot of the time, players can struggle to get to grips with the style of play, so when somebody like Just comes along and shows he can perform, it puts him on their radar.

“Celtic are in a good position now after winning the league, so they want to act on that and strengthen the squad. They need to keep pushing forward.”

Just has been one of the best players for Motherwell this season. So, it is unsurprising that Celtic have been impressed with the New Zealand international.

In fact, these rumours are nothing new. Celtic have been linked with a move for Just for the past several months now.

Of course, Celtic have been linked with some of Scottish football's best players in the past as well but more often than not, they have missed out as clubs from other leagues have swooped in bigger bids than they are willing to make.
