Celtic have agreed personal terms with the Hungarian international and are in talks over a transfer fee.
Celtic have made four signings already this summer. And it looks like they have already agreed personal terms with a Hungarian goalkeeper as well.
That position has somewhat been overlooked in this summer window. Kasper Schmeichel did retire in the off-season though, vacating one spot in the squad.
It is a spot that has not been filled. Viljami Sinisalo is the number one right now. That has divided the opinion of the fanbase.
Whether you think Sinisalo is good enough to be the main starter in goal or not, there is no denying that, at the very least, Celtic need another starting-level option in goal.
Celtic agree personal terms with Hungarian goalkeeper
According to HazzaXtra, Celtic are in talks with Blackburn Rovers over a move for Hungarian international goalkeeper Balazs Toth.
Personal terms have been agreed, while a verbal agreement has also been reached over the fee Blackburn Rovers want for Toth. The figure is around £4 million.
Now, Blackburn Rovers are waiting for Celtic to submit an official offer. It is just about the Hoops now putting forward the deal that has been agreed verbally.
One has to imagine that it cannot be a problem. Celtic have needed another goalkeeper for some time and it looks like Toth is going to be their man.
Expect to see Toth in a Celtic jersey very soon. Is he going to be a starter without question or competition for Sinisalo, if the transfer does end up happening?
Toth's data from last season is worrying
To be very honest, this is a piece of scouting that I would raise an eyebrow about. We have seen the Hoops linked with quite a few goalkeepers. And when it was Tjark Ernst or Dinko Horkas, the data clearly showed why Celtic might have been interested.
They were goalkeepers who were clearly outperforming expectations and were one of the best in their league. Can the same be said about Toth? To be frank, no.
He conceded 43 goals in the Championship last season, underperforming his xGOT. He had a save percentage around 69%, which is significantly better than Sinisalo but only in the 67th percentile in the English Championship.
The most worrying aspect though might be his passing. Toth was in the 16th percentile for successful pass percentage and the 17th percentile for accurate long ball percentage. Those are not the signs of a goalkeeper who is good with the ball at his feet. In fact, those numbers are well below average.
Obviously, one could also argue that Blackburn Rovers finished 20th in the Championship last season. So, playing out from the back would not have been in his job description there.
And of course, the numbers do not tell the entire story. Toth is a full Hungarian international after all. So, he must be doing something right. Let's hope Celtic have got their scouting right.
