Celtic are bidding for a centre-back who had already agreed to join the Rangers in the past.

Celtic should be looking to open up a gap with the Rangers this summer. The Ibrox club showed a lot of ambition last time around in the transfer market. But their investment did not lead to results on the pitch as they finished third in the Premiership.

They have gone ahead and brought in the manager who orchestrated a second-place finish for Hearts. They were one draw away from winning the league.

Whether you like Derek McInnes or not, he is a veteran of the Scottish game. So, you can expect the Rangers to be a lot more solid and consistent. Celtic will need to up their game.

There are several areas where Celtic need to improve this summer. One of them is their defence. And it looks like they are vying to sign a defender the Rangers had reportedly agreed personal terms with last summer.

Celtic bidding to sign La Liga centre-back

According to journalist Matteo Moretto, Eintracht Frankfurt, Celtic and Stuttgart are bidding for Nobel Mendy.

Mendy was believed to have been on the verge of joining the Rangers last summer. But it collapsed in the final steps. Personal terms were believed to have been agreed beforehand and was not thought to be the issue.

There were some contrary reports on why the move to Ibrox did not happen. Some suggested that the Rangers had not been able to reach an agreement with Real Betis. Others claimed that there was some issue with Mendy's medical.

Whatever may have been the case, it did not stop Mendy from making a move to Rayo Vallecano soon afterwards. He impressed on loan there and eventually joined on a permanent basis.

Now, it looks like another move could be on the horizon. And Celtic are one of the clubs hoping to sign him.

Mendy could be a good signing for the Scottish champions

We already know that Mendy is open to the idea of a move to Glasgow. Of course, things might have changed after a full season of consistent La Liga-level football.

Mendy is also drawing interest from Bundesliga clubs. So, would he still choose to move to Scotland over heading to the German top flight?

On paper, it feels like someone like Mendy could be an excellent addition to this Celtic team. He is 21 years of age but already has a decent bit of experience under his belt, having played La Liga football. He has also represented Senegal at the international level.

He would add to a centre-back that already has Cameron Carter-Vickers, Auston Trusty and Liam Scales. He is left-footed though, which would not solve the balance issues at the back when it comes to building out and defending counters.
