Celtic are close to signing the Chelsea striker out of nowhere, as there had been no reports about such a move beforehand.

It was only yesterday that Celtic pulled off a surprise move out of nowhere. It emerged that they had agreed a deal to sign Oliver Sorensen on loan from Parma. And now, it looks like they are set to sign another such player, with whom there had been zero links over the past few weeks.

It is worth pointing out that Celtic are believed to have been close to signing Chelsea left-back Landon Emenalo, but so far, it has not gone through. Let us hope that it does before the summer transfer window closes.

Emenalo is believed to be recovering from a small injury. But on the other hand, it looks like Celtic were quietly negotiating over the signing of one of Chelsea's strikers on loan as well.

According to Anthony Joseph, Celtic are closing in on the signing of Chelsea striker Shim Mheuka.

It’s understood that the Cobham graduate is undergoing a medical in London today, ahead of a loan move to the Scottish champions.

He is very highly regarded at Chelsea. Mheuka has agreed terms on a contract with Chelsea until 2033 recently.

Breaking into the senior team and playing regularly is very difficult at a club like Chelsea though. Even though they have allowed plenty of strikers to leave this summer, they still have Joao Pedro and Danny Welbeck.

Also, with no European football on offer, that further reduces chances for youngsters like Mheuka to get a chance at Chelsea right now.

As a result, it is not hard to see why sending out Mheuka on loan makes sense for the youngster's development.

As for Celtic, Callum Osmand appeared to have picked up an injury recently. The extent of it remains to be seen but he was seen leaving Parkhead on crutches and a moon boot.

That means that Celtic would only have Camilo Duran and Kasper Hogh as options up. And the latter has disappointed many since his club-record move from Bodo/Glimt this summer.

So, having someone like Mheuka at least gives them a cover option if another injury happens at some point this season.

Also, Celtic will be playing in four competitions. The three domestic ones and the Europa League. So, there are more minutes to go around and the opportunity for someone like Mheuka to have a meaningful role in the team.

In the long term, Mheuka is not someone who will end up at Celtic on a permanent basis. That simply is not going to happen considering how highly Chelsea rate him.

This is just a developmental role deal, which solves problems for both clubs. Let's hope that it goes through and is a success.
