It looks like another long-expected Celtic move is now very close to happening.
There are just days left in the summer transfer window. Yet, it would be safe to say that most Celtic fans are not happy with the squad in place at Parkhead right now.
The 5-1 away defeat to LASK is proof that many problems still remain in place at the club. How can they solve it? Well, that is where things get tougher.
Failure to qualify for the Champions League means that Celtic have lost out on about £70 million of revenue. Participating in the Europa League simply is not as lucrative, or anywhere close.
So, they do not have the spending power in these last few days of the window that they would have if they qualified for the Champions League. And so, some exits need to take place if fresh signings are to be made.
Another Celtic exit not far away
Celtic have already seen one crucial midfielder leave in the form of Arne Engels, whose absence was felt in that second leg against LASK as the Hoops struggled to control the game at all. And now, it feels like he could be joined by another high-profile name out the exit door, even though he has not played much lately.
According to a report from Stephen McGowan in The Herald, Reo Hatate should also leave before this week’s deadline.
This news comes after Hatate was left out of the squad against Falkirk at the weekend. Regarding that decision, Martin O'Neill had said when asked if the absence was due to a potential exit:
“It’s a good point. But Reo wasn’t fit to play. He wasn’t fit. He strained himself in training and ruled himself out of contention.”
But the questions are always going to be there. Then again, it does not really matter. Hatate has not been involved for quite some time now and this exit should have happened a long time ago.
It has not, that is somewhat of a shortcoming. But it is how things seem to work at Celtic Park a lot of the time.
Will Celtic sign a replacement for Hatate?
If or when Hatate does end up leaving, it will be very interesting to see whether the club end up trying to sign a replacement for him or not.
One cannot help but point out that there is a lot of similarities between Mika Baur and Hatate when it comes to their movements and style of play.
So, it is quite possible that the club already feel that they have signed a replacement for Hatate before even letting him go.
Or perhaps they could bring in another midfielder to make up the numbers. Do not forget that Paulo Bernardo has left on loan as well.
