Anthony Joseph has confirmed some fantastic late-night news, as Celtic have agreed a deal.

Celtic have agreed their next signing. But it is one that might end up dividing the supporters regarding the direction of the club.

The 5-1 away defeat at the hands of LASK has left the fans deflated. And if they were hoping that the club would try to make up for it by making some blockbuster signings before the transfer window closed, they might be in for a rude awakening.

Celtic are set to make signings for sure. But they might not be ones that help the club improve immediately. The hope is that it works out in the long run.

It’s understood that the Dutch midfielder is due to travel to the UK tomorrow to undergo a medical and finalise the paperwork on his move to Celtic.

There is one thing that will leave Celtic fans a bit worried though. According to Joseph, it is believed that the club view Van den Berg as a replacement for Arne Engels.

Yes, the club view a 19-year-old midfielder with only eight appearances at the senior level as the replacement for a player who moved to West Ham United in a £22 million transfer this summer, breaking the all-time Championship record.

It would be an understatement to say that those are lofty expectations from Van den Berg. Is he capable of reaching those heights?

Is Van den Berg the answer to Celtic's problems or just another signing?

At the end of the day, it is another addition for Celtic. And that has to be viewed as a positive for a club that has struggled quite a bit with their depth, particularly in midfield.

At times, it feels like Celtic lack legs in the middle of the park. So, someone like Van den Berg can help in that respect.

But that will only be true if it proves that he is good enough to be playing regular football for Celtic moving forward.

If that does not turn out to be the case then it would turn out to be a signing just for the sake of it. Unfortunately, Celtic have done that enough times in the past.

There is no denying that Celtic's failure to reach the Champions League has affected their transfer targets. They have gone from chasing ready-made players to project signings once again.
