Celtic have been handed a boost in their race to sign the Borussia Dortmund winger this summer.

One of the areas where Celtic will need to improve this summer is on the flanks. Jota has spent more than a year out injured, and unfortunately, it is unreasonable to expect him to be the same player when he returns, the timing of which still remains uncertain.

The club made a couple of additions on the wings last summer. But they proved to be underwhelming, at best.

Sebastian Tounekti played regularly. But except for flashes of quality, he was never able to perform on a consistent basis and was viewed by a large section of the fanbase as the weak link in this team.

On the other hand, one can only wonder what the recruitment team saw when they chased the signature of Michel-Ange Balikwisha for more than a year. He was signed for around £5 million and will go down as one of the worst signings in club history. After playing a handful of games after arriving, he was completely frozen out of the team.

Fortunately, Yang Hyun-jun rose to the occasion and established himself as a starter. He deserves a ton of credit for turning his Celtic career around when most would have given up, having seen an exit collapse at the last minute in the previous summer window.

All things considered, Celtic will need to strengthen further this summer. One of their targets is Borussia Dortmund winger. And the Hoops have been handed some good news when it comes to their pursuit of him.

According to Mark Hendry (via The Celtic Way), Hoffenheim are not set to take the option up, potentially paving the way for Celtic to make their move for Cole Campbell. Borussia Dortmund will be looking for around £6 million to part ways with the winger.

Now, it is easy to get excited when there is a 'Borussia Dortmund player' tag on someone. But would Campbell be the right signing for the Hoops?

He has been a standout at the youth levels for Dortmund. But we have never seen him at his best at the senior level.

Of course, it is difficult for a youngster to make the grade at a club like Borussia Dortmund. He spent time out on loan at Hoffenheim. And he did not do much of note there either.

So, if Celtic are to spend around £6 million on signing him, they need to be completely certain that he is the right man for the job. Otherwise, we could see a repeat of the Balikwisha situation.
