The Celtic legend's sacking has been officially announced but a return to Parkhead cannot be on the cards.
Celtic will be looking for a new manager in the summer. And interestingly, one of their former players looks set to be searching for a managerial post as well, as he has been sacked.
Ayr United have announced that Scott Brown has left the club by mutual consent. He had spent more than two years managing the Championship club.
Brown's exit comes on the back of an eight-game winless run for Ayr United. It is no secret that they had promotion aspirations not too long ago, but as things stand, they find themselves sitting at eighth in the Championship table.
So, it should not come as a surprise that Brown has parted ways with Ayr United. Now, it remains to be seen what the future holds for him in coaching.
We have little doubt that at some point, Brown is going to be linked with the Celtic job. Martin O'Neill is expected to vacate it in the summer, with his interim run coming to an end for good. Could Broony be the man to replace him?
That should definitely not happen, to be very honest. While there is no doubt that he is one of the greatest players in Celtic history, he is not ready to be the manager of the club. Not by a long margin.
Brown has shown flashes of quality as a manager at both Fleetwood Town and Ayr United. But then, there have been times when things have gone wrong as well, which is why he has been shown the exit door by both teams.
He simply does not have the resume to be the Celtic manager. But of course, a return to Parkhead would make a ton of sense if he is ready to take a step down and become an assistant coach.
Broony was a serial winner at Celtic and knows the club like the back of his hand. If there is someone who can help stabilise the next era of the Hoops, as they stare at a summer revamp, it is the former captain.
Whoever the next manager is will need to put together a good coaching staff around him to successfully steer what is expected to be a transition. That being said, at a club like Celtic, the transition cannot be long.
Nobody has the patience to see Celtic without silverware for any significant length of time. And if they miss out on the league title this season, the pressure will be on them to get it back next year.
