It looks like the German youth international player is now on the radar of Celtic as they look to solve a problem position.
If one had to come up with a list of positions where Celtic must improve this summer, one of the names near the top would be goalkeeper. And for understandable reasons.
Whether you believe Viljami Sinisalo is a starting-level goalkeeper or not is a matter of opinion. What is fact is that Celtic do not have any real depth or competition in that position right now.
Kasper Schmeichel's contract was set to be up this summer anyway. And a serious injury has led to him announcing his retirement from the game.
In the process, he became the second legendary goalkeeper to retire as a Celtic player. Joe Hart did the same before him, although in the Englishman's case, injury did not force his hand.
Coming back to the issue at hand, Celtic need another goalkeeper, whether that be to compete with Sinisalo or immediately take his place in the team. And a German goalie is on their radar for that purpose.
Celtic Eyeing German Youth International Goalkeeper
According to The Celtic Way, the Hoops are lining up Hertha Berlin goalkeeper Tjark Ernst.
They are not alone in the race though. According to German outlet Wolfsburger Allgemeine Zeitung, Ajax are keen to sign Ernst as well.
Of course, Celtic do not have a great recent record when it comes to competing with Ajax for players.
In the summer, it had looked like Celtic were closing in on a move for Kasper Dolberg. But Ajax entered the race for the striker at the last minute and derailed the Hoops' plans.
Celtic could not sign Dolberg. Instead, he ended up at Ajax. The Hoops settled for the signing of Kelechi Iheanacho as a free agent. Although, in hindsight, they must be happy with that.
Who is Tjark Ernst?
It would be safe to say that most Celtic fans won't be aware of Ernst or his journey in the game. Understandably so, as he is currently playing in the second division for Hertha Berlin.
Ernst came through the youth ranks at Bochum but was not able to establish himself there, never even making a senior appearance for his boyhood club.
Ernst was very highly regarded while coming up through the youth ranks. In fact, he has represented Germany at every level from U15 through U21.
It is at Hertha Berlin that Ernst has established himself as a senior-level goalkeeper, albeit in the second division.
Naturally, that fact will lead to quite a few raised eyebrows. That being said, it is not rare for clubs to look for quality goalkeepers from lower leagues.
A perfect example of that would be Newcastle United signing Ewen Jaouen recently from Ligue 2 side Reims in a £24 million transfer package.
