Celtic are looking to sign a quality 23-year-old goalkeeper, who could help the club next season.
There are a number of areas across the pitch where Celtic need to strengthen. One of them is surely between the posts.
Kasper Schmeichel is out with a serious injury and will be out of contract in the summer. So, we will not see him in a Celtic jersey again and can only wish him the best moving forward.
On the other hand, the numbers for Viljami Sinisalo are not that impressive. He has faced an xGOT of 9.14 and conceded 11 goals.
So, Celtic could do with a quality goalkeeper who could come in and immediately be the number one.
And it looks like they have someone in their sights who has earned comparisons with the likes of Manuel Neuer and Jan Oblak. So, that is a pretty high bar.
According to the Daily Mail, Celtic are looking at Austrian goalkeeper Nikolas Polster. Wolfsberger have struggled this season and face the prospect of relegation from the Austrian Bundesliga, which could lead to the departure of the 23-year-old.
When you look at Polster's numbers, they are impressive to say the least. He has faced an xGOT of 44.35 and conceded 40 goals. Also, he has made more successful passes and saved more penalties than anybody else in the Austrian Bundesliga, is commanding in the box as he falls in the 81st percentile for high claims and in the 86th percentile for accurate long balls.
On paper, he looks like a goalkeeper who could thrive at Celtic. He is saving more goals than he is expected to, is good with the ball at his feet, has not made a single error this season that has led to a goal and is a commanding presence in the box as well despite not being the tallest goalie.
Now, it remains to be seen whether Celtic will make a move or not. And if they do, will they be able to convince him.
The same report goes on to add that Wolves are watching him as well. On the other hand, Brighton and Brentford have also scouted Polster throughout the course of the campaign. So, there is plenty of competition for his signature down in England.
Celtic can offer him the first-team spot from the very start though, something that some others might not. Also, at 23 years of age, he needs to be playing regularly. If he takes on a backup role, he might end up being stuck in that for the rest of his career.
