Celtic have opened talks to sign a World Cup standout who looks set to receive a record deal.
Celtic will be looking to strengthen their midfield in this summer transfer window. That is largely down to the fact that some of their key midfielders could be heading for the exit door.
Arne Engels is arguably the most likely candidate to leave. He was on the receiving end of a £25 million offer in the winter. And that interest has not gone away.
While Celtic did well to turn the interest down in the middle of the season, they might not do the same if an offer arrives in the summer.
Engels might not be the only midfielder who heads for the exit door either. Benjamin Nygren's name has been doing rounds of the rumour mill as well.
At the same time, there is Reo Hatate, who is almost certain to leave. And it is hard to imagine that Paulo Bernardo would be keen to stick around either.
So, Celtic will need to sign a few midfielders this summer. And it looks like a World Cup standout is on their radar.
Celtic want to sign standout Egyptian midfielder from World Cup
Emam Ashour was a standout at the World Cup, scoring a couple of goals for Egypt before exiting the tournament.
According to CeltsAreHere, Celtic have already spoken to Ashour's representatives and his club to establish what it would take to make a deal happen.
On the other hand, it looks like his current club Al Ahly are not too interested in seeing Ashour leave in this summer window.
According to the same outlet, Al Ahly are preparing to offer Ashour a new contract worth in excess of 33 million EGP per season as they look to keep the World Cup hero in Egypt.
That works out to about £9,500 per week although it is believed that bonuses could take it up to £15,000. Of course, those are not figures that would scare away Celtic, if they are determined to sign Ashour this summer.
How much will it take to sign Ashour from Al Ahly?
It is believed that it would take a transfer fee in the region of £4 million to sign Ashour from Al Ahly this summer. Once again, that is a figure Celtic should be comfortable paying.
Now, it remains to be seen if Celtic end up making a serious push to sign Ashour or not. Is the right solution to the club's midfield problems?
If you take a look at his international stats, Ashour has scored just two goals for Egypt. That would suggest he is a midfielder who does not bring much to the table going forward.
It is a very different story at club level though. Playing for Al Ahly, he has scored 32 goals and provided 25 assists in just 105 games.
