Celtic appear to planning to make a bid for the player whose profile is what Martin O'Neill wants this summer.
Celtic have plenty to be happy about when it comes to the start of their 26/27 season. The club have done well in the Premiership and the League Cup. But even more importantly, they have taken a major step forward in Europe.
Celtic won 3-0 against LASK in the first leg of their Champions League play-off matchup. While the tie is not finished, the Hoops have to be considered the heavy favourites to go through following a win of that magnitude.
Of course, their record away from home in Europe and in Champions League qualifiers in general, is not much to write home about. So, they cannot take anything for granted.
That being said, it looks like Celtic are already putting plans in place for moves they could make after the second leg.
Celtic planning bid for midfielder
According to Football Insider, Celtic are planning to submit an improved offer for Gvidas Gineitis. Martin O'Neill is aiming to further bolster the club's midfield.
This is in line with what David Friel is reporting as well. According to his article in The Scottish Sun, Torino want around £9 million but Celtic remain keen to sign Gineitis.
O’Neill has made it clear that he wants a physical, box-to-box midfielder and the Lithuanian international fits the bill.
It is said that Celtic are set to ramp up their interest in the midfielder following the Champions League play-off.
One would imagine that it is based on the assumption that Celtic will be able to qualify for the main phase of the competition, which realistically, they should.
Would Gineitis be the right signing?
Gineitis has been linked with a move to Celtic for quite some time now. And he seems to be the profile O'Neill is keen to add to his squad.
It is worth pointing out that Gineitis is not the only midfielder Celtic have been linked with in recent times either.
The club are believed to be closing in on a move for Ermin Mahmic as well, who is considered one of the brightest midfielders in Bosnian football and was a standout at the World Cup, scoring two goals for his national team at the tournament.
Another player who seems to be on their radar is Niko Sigur. He can play both in midfield and as a right-back, and could be brought in to take the Canadian international's place in the team.
