It looks like Celtic are advancing in their talks to sign the right-back after it has emerged Alistair Johnston has suffered another long-term injury.
Alistair Johnston has dealt with his fair share of injury problems in recent times. It had looked like he could potentially be on his way out of Celtic this summer, after a strong World Cup. Everton were thought to be interested.
Those plans have been derailed completely, as Johnston has suffered another injury. And once again, it is one that will keep him out for a while.
Johnston is expected to be out of action until November at the very least. Unfortunately, this is the second year in a row that he has started the season with an injury.
Fortunately, Colby Donovan has stepped up to the plate. He was phenomenal against LASK. But despite that, it does look like the Hoops have another right-back option on their transfer radar.
Celtic in talks to sign Alistair Johnston's Canadian teammate
According to Ekrem Konur, Celtic are in talks to sign Niko Sigur from Hajduk Split. The 22‑year‑old Canadian international can play both as a right‑back and as a defensive midfielder.
Both are positions the Hoops want to strengthen this summer. A bid is expected soon, with Sigur’s versatility attracting the club’s interest.
Of course, this is not the first time Celtic have been linked with Sigur this summer. In fact, the rumours have been doing the rounds for a while now.
With not much time left in the transfer window, one would imagine that it is about time that Celtic made some concrete moves, if they really want Sigur.
Unfortunately, with Johnston's injury turning out to be another long-term one, Celtic badly need another option in that position.
Why signing Sigur makes sense
Sigur is widely recognised as primarily a defensive midfielder. But interestingly, he has played most of his football as a right-back.
There are those who might claim that Celtic do not need more options at right-back after how well Donovan did against LASK. But it is always good to have options around.
Sigur's versatility means that he can play there, but also in midfield, depending on the situation. So, he would not stand in the way of Donovan's development, if the youngster does start delivering at an elite level consistently.
Celtic are already thought to be closing in on Landon Emenalo and Ermin Mahmic. Do not be surprised to see Sigur join them through the Parkhead entrance.
Also, with the number of injuries Johnston has picked up in recent years, it might be time for Celtic to start planning for a future where he is no longer the first-choice option at right-back.
Unfortunately, the club simply cannot rely on someone who has lately spent more time injured than available.
