It looks like Celtic are now set to accelerate their plans to sign the Premier League player wanted by Martin O'Neill.
Celtic have not brought in any fresh faces yet. The only move of note has been agreeing a one-year deal with Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain to continue at Parkhead. Fans might have had Kelechi Iheanacho and Marcelo Saracchi on the priority list ahead of the former Arsenal and Liverpool man.
The hope is that the club will pick up pace soon. And there have been indications pointing in that direction over the last few days.
Reports broke out earlier that Camilo Duran's agent was in Scotland. The Qarabag striker has emerged as one of the top targets after scoring five goals in the Champions League last season.
Duran is not the only player who is on the radar of Celtic though. In fact, someone they have been following for a while has seemingly become available as well.
Celtic to push for deal to sign Tottenham Hotspur midfielder
When Martin O'Neill was spotted last season at a Preston North End game, most people assumed that he was there on a scouting mission. It did not take long for Celtic to be linked with Alfie Devine.
The midfielder spent the loan at Preston North End from Tottenham Hotspur. The Championship club had an option to buy included in that deal as well, but that has now expired.
It is believed Preston North End did want to sign Devine permanently. That would suggest that the player might not have been keen on a stay.
Now, according to Football Insider, Celtic are plotting a move to sign Devine as they aim to accelerate their transfer plans. O'Neill is a big fan of the player and is keen to reach an agreement with Tottenham Hotspur.
It is said that Celtic are now prepared to step up their interest. That would make sense as well, after Tottenham Hotspur have signed Mateus Fernandes and Sandro Tonali in midfield this summer.
So, if there was ever going to be a chance for Devine to break into the Spurs midfield, there is not any longer. A move away seems like the only logical step.
What does the data say about Alfie Devine and where he could fit at Celtic
Devine could be a solid addition for Celtic though, who might see quite a few midfielders depart in this summer window.
Arne Engels is being heavily linked with a record move away. Benjamin Nygren is expected to draw interest as well. On the other hand, Reo Hatate and Paulo Bernardo could depart in search of playing time.
So, Devine could turn out to be just one of the midfielders Celtic end up signing this summer. His 16 goals and assists last season, eight of each, prove that he is capable of contributing going forward.

Taking a deeper look into the data, Devine was in the 97th percentile or higher for positional peers in the Championship in pretty much every metric in front of goal. It was pretty much the case with the creative side of his game as well.
The only shortcoming might be the defensive side of his game, as he is probably average off the ball. But then again, Devine was in the 92nd percentile for possession won in the final 3rd.
So, in many ways, he looks like a complete midfielder who can do an excellent job as a number 10 or 8.
