Reports have claimed that Celtic submitted an offer to sign the centre-back, although there is some confusion around the situation.
It is no secret that Celtic need to sign some quality talents all across the pitch this summer. Centre-back is no exception.
Celtic do not have a lot of depth in that area of the pitch, to be honest. Cameron Carter-Vickers spent a large portion of the season out injured, and not for the first time in his career.
One has to wonder if we will ever see the American centre-back perform at his best again. One could argue that he has not reached those levels since his debut season for the club, while on loan from Tottenham Hotspur.
Celtic's other two options in the heart of defence are Liam Scales and Auston Trusty. That was the regular starting duo in the heart of defence for pretty much entirety of the previous campaign.
Both of them are left-footed though. And that does create some awkward angles for Celtic, while building out from the back as well as in the defensive phase.
So, it would not be a surprise if Celtic look to sign another centre-back this summer. In fact, that is pretty much the expectation. And one name has been doing the rounds of the rumour mill for a while.
Now, it looks like Celtic have gone one step further and put in an offer to try and bring him to Parkhead.
According to Greek outlet Gazzetta.gr (via Daily Record), Celtic, along with Olympiakos, submitted an offer of up to £ 3.5 million for Zinedin Smajlovic.
But it was not accepted by his club Sandefjord. They are believed to be holding out for a transfer fee closer to £4.3 million.
On paper, that kind of a transfer fee should not be a problem for Celtic. But in the recent past, we have witnessed more than one transfer saga drag on for longer than required and ultimately not end up anywhere of substance.
So, it would not come as much of a surprise if the same thing happens with this Smajlovic saga as well. Let's see how this plays out over the coming days and weeks.
Smajlovic is 22 years of age and stands at around 6'3". So, he would immediately add some size and physicality to the Celtic backline.
If you look at some of the numbers he has put up, his biggest strengths might be with the ball at his feet.
Smajlovic has completed more dribbles, long balls and created more chances than any other centre-back in the Eliteserien this season.
That is a unique profile in many ways. And it suggests that Celtic are looking for someone who can play out from the back with ease.
On the other hand, Michael Shearer has reported that there are currently two offers on the table for the player, but neither is from Scotland.
So, it is very possible that Celtic's interest in the centre-back is not as serious as has been suggested in the Greek media.
