Celtic have started talks to sign the defender, who would be a no-brainer of an addition this summer.
The summer transfer window is upon us and Celtic will need to strengthen the squad significantly if they are to meet the expectations of the supporters. The 25/26 campaign might have brought a double with it, but it was not on the back of impressive performances.
Instead, it was largely based on the results of other teams and the winning habit of the Celtic squad, who managed to squeeze out narrow wins throughout the campaign despite being nowhere near their best.
That is not something that can be replicated constantly. Celtic will need to bring in players who will improve the squad this summer.
Obviously, fans are hoping for the arrival of fresh faces. But at the same time, some familiar ones could help things a lot as well.
One player who was a standout for Celtic last season, whenever given a chance, was Marcelo Saracchi.
Saracchi was signed on loan from Boca Juniors last summer and largely played the role of a backup to Kieran Tierney. But he was so impressive that a large section of the fanbase thought he should have been starting on a more regular basis.
For some reason, Celtic have not signed Saracchi on a permanent basis yet, even though Boca Juniors seem keen to part ways with him. MLS sides and teams across Europe seem to have taken an interest in the left-back.
So, if Celtic want to sign him on a permanent basis, they will need to move quickly. Fortunately, it looks like that is exactly what they are doing.
According to BelfastLive, Celtic are poised to enter negotiations with Boca Juniors regarding a permanent transfer for Saracchi and the club have already conducted initial talks with the player's representatives. Parkhead officials are now prepared to conclude a deal.
Well, as far as first signings of the summer go go, that appears to be a very good one if you are Martin O'Neill. Saracchi has already proven himself in Celtic colours.
There would not be the risk of bringing in someone new and hoping that he is capable of delivering. We already know that Saracchi can do that.
Having someone like him is especially important for Celtic as Tierney has a long injury history. While he was able to avoid any long-term spell on the sidelines last season, the Hoops always need to ensure that they have a capable alternative.
That is the kind of squad depth that top clubs need to have. And signing Saracchi would provide that for Celtic.
Of course, if Celtic want to get the deal done, they need to move quickly as other clubs are seemingly interested in the Uruguayan international as well.
