Celtic have reportedly found an agreement that the fans have been waiting for.
There finally is some positive news surrounding Celtic. It has been somewhat of a frustrating summer for the supporters already.
The club made the right decision by sticking with O'Neill. If it is not broken, do not fix it. And after we saw how things played out under Wilfried Nancy, the doubts about another new appointment were always going to be there.
Robbie Keane had looked like the other outstanding candidate but fans were not keen on seeing him in the Celtic Park dugout. So, the decision to bring back O'Neill on a one-year deal, plus the option for another, was made.
Now, it looks like the coaching staff situation has been sorted as well, after earlier reports suggested that talks could collapse after lower wages had been offered to the two candidates. Fortunately, it looks like an agreement has been found since then.
According to World Football Index, Shaun Maloney and Mark Fotheringham have agreed financial terms on contracts. Only final contractual details remain to be resolved.
So, it looks like both of them are going to continue being part of Martin O'Neill's team. That is brilliant news if you are a Celtic fan.
Maloney and Fotheringham played a key role in steadying the ship last season. O'Neill might be the face of the coaching unit, but at 74 years of age, he is happy enough for his staff to have a lot of say on matters as well.
O'Neill has never been shy about admitting that, even openly to the media. So, the fact that Maloney and Fotheringham are set to continue is brilliant for the team moving forward.
Celtic are already looking likely to lose Gavin Strachan to West Bromwich Albion. Reports have suggested that the deal has already been agreed and he will be on his way to England this summer, bringing an end to his stint at Parkhead, which started in 2020.
That makes Maloney and Fotheringham staying even more vital. It ensures some continuity in the dugout.
Now, the focus needs to turn towards the summer transfer window. Celtic have seemingly sorted out the coaching situation, although they will still need to bring in a replacement for Strachan.
Signing the right players will be vital. O'Neill and his team were able to squeeze out results with an underperforming squad. But they cannot be expected to pull it off once again, especially if key names like Daizen Maeda, Arne Engels and Benjamin Nygren end up leaving, and are not replaced by those with similar quality.
