Celtic have started initial talks to sign the international midfielder available for an offer north of €10 million.
Celtic have a tough task on their hands this summer. The Hoops need to find a way to improve the squad after what was an underwhelming season. But at the same time, several of their best players are being linked with moves away from Parkhead.
One player who seems to be on his way out is Arne Engels. It was just a couple of summers ago that Celtic signed him for a club-record fee from FC Augsburg.
While eyebrows had been raised initially, as the Belgian international is not the flashiest of players, he has proven his value to the team over time. It was only after his return from injury that the Hoops found their feet late in the season and went on an 8-game winning run, which helped them secure the league and cup double.
So, if Celtic do end up parting with Engels, they will need to find a proper replacement for him. And it looks like they have someone on their radar who it will take north of €10 million to sign. Discussions are already underway.
Celtic start talks to sign Arne Engels' potential replacement
It looks like Celtic have started talks to sign a midfielder who could potentially be the replacement for Engels. The Belgian has been heavily linked with the likes of Nottingham Forest, Crystal Palace, AS Roma and more.
Celtic turned down a £25 million offer in the winter. But they might not show as much restraint if a similar one arrives this summer.
On the other hand, according to reports in Italy, Celtic are interested in Gvidas Gineitis. They have begun initial discussions regarding the player, finding the club willing to listen to potential offers.
Gineitis isn't necessarily available, but if a fee higher than €10 million arrives, Torino could consider letting him leave during this summer transfer window.
Would Ginetis be a good signing?
Gineitis is currently on the books at Torino. He is 22 years of age and started 23 Serie A games for them last season. Overall, in 31 appearances, he had an assist to his name.
At the international level, he has been successful in establishing himself as well. He has made 32 appearances for Lithuania and scored 5 goals.
So, Gineitis is not the type of midfielder you would bring in and expect to contribute a ton going forward in terms of his output of goals and assists.

That makes the €10 million-plus transfer valuation feel a bit steep. That would be pretty close to a record for Celtic.
There is no doubt that Gineitis would provide a steady presence in the middle of the park. But should Celtic not be aiming for more if they sanction a record departure involving Engels this summer?
