Celtic made a failed attempt to sign a player from one of their Scottish rivals before the summer transfer deadline.

Celtic had an interesting end to the summer transfer window. From their business, it is quite clear that the Hoops had left a lot of work to be done after Champions League qualification was secured. Once again, unfortunately, they failed.

That had a clear impact on their transfer business in the remainder of the summer transfer window. They went from trying to make permanent signings to largely relying on loan deals.

Landon Emenalo and Shin Mheuka arrived from Chelsea, Sam Johnstone from Wolves and Oliver Sorensen from Parma.

Joel van den Berg was signed on a permanent basis from PSV while Jordan Lotomba has been signed on a one-year deal.

There is one more player though that Celtic had tried to sign late in the summer window from one of their Scottish rivals, but failed.

Celtic failed in late attempted to sign Hibernian player

When Celtic's pursuit of Gvidas Gineitis collapsed late in the window, it is only natural that they would have tried to look at an alternative in midfield. That player appears to have been Josh Mulligan from Hibernian.

According to CeltsAreHere, Scott Burns said while speaking on Hotline Live: “I was told yesterday that Celtic made contact with Josh Mulligan’s camp, but it was obviously too late in the day to get anything done.

“I don’t know if it was contact club to club, but there were certainly feelers towards Josh Mulligan, but whatever happened, it never got off the ground. That was yesterday.”

Well, it is not hard to see why Hibernian might not have been keen on any potential exit at that point in the window.

They simply would not have had the time to bring in a replacement. And no club wants to be in that position. Do not be surprised if this ends up being revisited in the winter window.

At the same time, there is no reason to believe that it might not. Mulligan was clearly an alternative. Otherwise, Celtic would not have waited until the very end of the summer window to make their move.

So, between now and the winter window, they might be able to pick out players who they believe is better than Mulligan and try to sign him instead.

Every transfer window, Celtic seem to get linked with a variety of players from the Scottish Premiership. But by the end of it, they rarely ever sign any of them.

Could Mulligan have been a good signing for Celtic? Most probably. He was most likely wanted for his ability to play in midfield. But he can contribute in defence as well, if the situation calls for it.

At the end of the day, though, the window is closed and Celtic did not sign Mulligan. Has that left them a little short in midfield? Most probably.
