The World Cup has come to an end, and Celtic seem to have set their sights on a United States international.
Another World Cup is now in the books, and it was quite the spectacle. It is time to turn the attention back to club football though. For Celtic, the start of the new season is now less than two weeks away.
Unfortunately, the Hoops have not done nearly enough to convince that they are backing Martin O'Neill in this summer transfer window.
Camilo Duran has been the only signing so far, while Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain has been brought back on a new deal.
But on the other hand, they have seen both Kelechi Iheanacho and Marcelo Saracchi depart. There is speculation around the future of several other key players, including Daizen Maeda and Arne Engels.
So, strengthening the squad was always going to be a tough task. And the club's inactivity has made it tougher.
Fortunately, it does look like things are starting to pick up a bit more pace. An American international now seems to be on the radar of Celtic.
Celtic want to sign American international
Of course, Celtic already have a couple of American internationals in their ranks in the form of Auston Trusty and Cameron Carter-Vickers.
Now, according to reports, Celtic are interested in New York City FC and United States national team goalkeeper Matt Freese.
It is no secret that the Hoops need to strengthen between the posts this summer. Their only genuine option there is Viljami Sinisalo.
Sinisalo underperformed his xGOT last season and had an underwhelming 60.5% save percentage. So, at the very least, they need to bring in someone to compete with him for the first-team spot.
Would Freese be a good signing for Celtic?
Freese was the starting goalkeeper for the United States at the World Cup. He has also been a regular starter for New York City FC in the MLS.
Some of the numbers when it comes to Freese are not the most impressive though, so one has to question Celtic's interest in the player.
Admittedly, he has a 70.4% save percentage in the 2026 MLS season, which is significantly better than Sinisalo's.

But other than total saves, he is not even in the 70th percentile in any meaningful category when it comes to goalkeepers.
Of course, it is very possible that a move for Freese works out and he proves to be an excellent goalkeeper for Celtic. But to be very honest, the club have been linked with more first-team-ready goalkeepers in this very window.
