Chelsea have made an addition that will be of interest to Celtic supporters as well.

It would be an understatement to say that the majority of the Celtic fanbase was not particularly fond of Mark Lawwell during his time at the club. It is not hard to understand why either.

The first is the Peter Lawwell factor, another figure who has more than his fair share of critics in the Celtic fanbase.

The second is the fact that the team never really improved while Lawwell was the head of recruitment at Celtic. But that has not stopped him from landing a high-profile role.

Chelsea have appointed Lawwell to a senior scouting role. Reports have suggested that he is already in place at Stamford Bridge and has started working for Xabi Alonso's side.

Why Mark Lawwell would interest a club like Chelsea

Obviously, other than Celtic, Lawwell also has a history of working for the City Football Group, which might have been very attractive to Chelsea.

Let us not forget that the Chelsea ownership have also seemed interested in the idea of running a network of clubs in a similar vein to the City Football Group.

They also have Strasbourg in their portfolio and have traded players with the French club on a regular basis in recent years.

So, it makes sense for them to bring in someone like Lawwell in a scouting role, as he already has experience working in that CFG system.

Of course, it is also possible that the club are not looking at that kind of bigger picture in the first place and are only focused on Lawwell scouting quality players for Chelsea.

How did Celtic recruit during the Mark Lawwell era?

It would be safe to say that Celtic's recruitment did go on a downward trajectory during Lawwell's time at the club, as most of the players brought in did not really succeed at Parkhead.

Yet, in hindsight, a lot of the failures might have been down to how they were used during their time at Celtic rather than a lack of talent or quality.

A few of the names that come to mind in that regard are Oh Hyeon-gyu and Maik Nawrocki, two players who did not really do much of note at Celtic but have shown their quality elsewhere.

Yang Hyun-jun, another player recruited during the Lawwell era, was on that path as well. But fortunately, he found his footing under Martin O'Neill and has ended up becoming a regular starter for the club.
