Chris Sutton and Celtic fans have reacted to the club's iconic title win at Parkhead.
Winning is a habit, and Celtic have mastered it. Even in their worst season since that 20/21 campaign, they have succeeded in winning silverware. The league title was secured and in thrilling fashion.
It looked like things were going all wrong. Celtic needed to win today to seal the league title and they went down just before half-time. But then, they were awarded a penalty moments before the break. It clearly struck the hand of the defender this time around and Arne Engels converted even though it was a poor effort and found its way underneath the goalkeeper.
Then, the game remained 1-1 for the majority of the second half, only for Daizen Maeda to rise to the occasion and score the second. With that goal, he might have also cemented himself as a Celtic legend. His run over the past few weeks has been immense.
After that, it was just trying to hold on and eventually, Celtic got the break and Callum Osmand ran the length of the pitch before finishing into an empty net to make it 3-1 and seal the league title. The 56th in club history. More than anybody else.
It was not just another league title though, for a club that is used to winning them. After all, this was their fifth straight one.
Celtic did see two managers depart this season. Brendan Rodgers quit, incidentally, after a loss to Hearts. Wilfried Nancy was sacked after just 33 days, after six losses in eight games, and will probably go down as the worst manager in club history.
Martin O'Neill was brought in as interim boss both times and he delivered. This was probably his last game at Celtic Park, and what better way to finish what has been a fairytale run.
Overhead kicks, 99th-minute winners, multiple comebacks, Celtic have had it all over the past few weeks to seal this title. Of course, Hearts did brilliantly to stay there right until the end but ultimately, the Hoops just had too much quality and experience.
As Chris Sutton wrote: "Have to feel for Hearts and Derek McInnes they have been brilliant all season… but Celtic’s mentality monsters found a way. How this Celtic team did it I couldn’t tell you but in the end the best team wins and deserves it."
A fan wrote: "What a great day. Some atmosphere. Shows just how much the Celtic players wanted it."
A third fan wrote: "Absolutely superb! Full marks to Hearts for giving Celtic a challenge for the first time in years. I certainly wouldn't have grumbled if they'd done it. Wonderful stuff! Unquestionably the best club in Britain!"
So, that is that. Another title race over and Celtic finish on top once again, one way or another. To be honest, Hearts deserve a ton of credit as well. Nobody could have expected them to come this far in the title race. It remains to be seen if they can build on it next season.
As for Celtic, the campaign is not over. They still have a Scottish Cup final to take care of, in what will arguably be O'Neill's last game as a manager. Let's see if the Hoops can hand him another trophy as a farewell gift. The fact that it will be against Dunfermline Athletic, a team managed by Neil Lennon, is absolutely brilliant.
