It looks like Celtic have their eyes set on the Premier League player, as he has been told he can leave.
Celtic have made two signings so far this summer. One of them scored a hattrick today. And it is believed that they are closing in on a third one in Haissem Hassan.
A lot more might be needed though, all across the pitch. Unsurprisingly, the club have left it late.
Also, they have not met a lot of the minimum expectations coming into the summer transfer window. One of them would have been signing a new goalkeeper. There is some good news in that regard.
England international told he can leave
According to a report from the Daily Mail, Nick Pope has also been told he can leave. While no offer has yet arrived, both Ipswich Town and Celtic are said to be monitoring his situation.
There have been conflicting reports about Pope and Celtic in recent days. Some outlets have claimed that the Hoops are keeping an eye on the England international. On the other hand, others have suggested that those claims are wide of the mark.
It remains to be seen how things will play out. But it is worth mentioning that Celtic do have a record of signing veteran goalkeepers.
Joe Hart, who incidentally shares a birthday with Pope, spent three years as the Celtic number one after being signed at a point when it was thought that his days as a starting goalkeeper were over.
Kasper Schmeichel also ended up spending two seasons at Celtic. And although injury problems affected his game, for the first several months, he was excellent, which many seem to have forgotten.
Would Nick Pope be a good signing for Celtic?
So, if Celtic do end up going for Pope, it should not come as any surprise. We all know those jerseys are going to fly off the shelves.
Pope is 34 years old and he has only one year left on his contract at Newcastle United. The Magpies have signed two goalkeepers this summer already though.
They have brought in Lukas Hornicek as the number one, while Ewen Jaouen is going to be his backup option. So, Pope does not have a place in the first-team picture right now. And you cannot expect a 10-time England international to be sitting in the reserves.

So, it is quite likely that he will be on his way out this summer. And a move to Celtic Park might not be the worst idea in the world.
Viljami Sinisalo needs some competition at the very least. And if you ask me, there are question marks over whether he is good enough to be a regular starter in goal for Celtic.
Sinisalo underperformed his xGOT last season and had a save percentage barely over 60%. So, he was not outstanding by any means although he deserves credit for coming in under difficult circumstances, as Schmeichel suffered a serious injury in the middle of the season, which ultimately led to his retirement.
