Fabrizio Romano has confirmed that Celtic have agreed a deal with the German midfielder out of nowhere.
It does look like Celtic are capable of working in silence. Most fans would have expected Haissem Hassan to be the club's next signing this summer, judging by the growing noise around that move.
Instead, it looks like the Hoops are now about to sign a German midfielder. And it is a name that had not been linked heavily with the club in the last few weeks.
Of course, the Celtic midfield could do with reinforcements this summer. Reo Hatate looks almost certain to leave after his lack of opportunities last season.
There is heavy speculation around the future of Arne Engels as well, who has some top-level interest and already saw a £25 million offer rejected in the winter.
The whispers around a potential Callum McGregor exit refuse to go away either. But amid all this, there is some positive news for the Hoops.
Fabrizio Romano confirms Celtic agreement
According to Fabrizio Romano, Celtic have reached an agreement with Mika Baur on personal terms. Club-to-club talks are ongoing with Paderborn.
Paderborn were in the German second division last season. Baur played a big role in getting them promoted.
They will be playing in the Bundesliga next season. But will Baur still be at the club or will he be in Scotland?
The player himself has made his decision, agreeing to personal terms with Celtic. Now, it remains to be seen if the club can find an agreement with Paderborn as well. In the past, that has often proven to be a stumbling block for the Hoops.
What does the data say about Mika Baur
Baru spent most of last season playing as a deep-lying playmaker. And his numbers were exceptional in the German second division.
He was in the 90th percentile or higher for goals, shots, assists, passes, chances created, accurate long balls, successful crosses and touches.
While Baur does not have a lot of size, he does put himself about on the defensive end as well. He was in the 90th percentile or higher for interceptions, recoveries and possessions won in the final third.
So, it looks like he could be a good option to have in the middle of the park. Of course, there is always going to be a question mark whenever a player is brought in from the second division of any league to a club like Celtic, where the demand is to win pretty much every game you take part in domestically and as many as possible in Europe.
If Baur can deal with the pressure of those expectations, he could prove to be a good player. Of course, it remains to be seen whether Celtic find an agreement with Paderborn or not. That is far from a foregone conclusion if recent history is anything to go by.
