Fabrizio Romano has broken the news about the verbal agreement, which is pretty much the end for Celtic's hopes.
This summer transfer window is going to be a big one for Celtic. The Hoops are struggling to convincingly beat Scottish opponents right now, which shows the lack of quality in this squad. Even last season, they had won the Premiership convincingly despite not being at their best for the second half of the campaign.
The drop in levels is quite concerning. Key players being out injured have had an effect on the team. But the overall lack of quality in the squad should not be overlooked either.
This Celtic squad is not good enough. Fresh faces need to be brought in this summer. Ones who are good enough to walk straight into the starting XI.
Someone who has that kind of quality is Andy Robertson. He has been linked with a return to his boyhood club for months now. In the past, he himself has seemed open to the idea.
Robertson's announcement that he will be leaving Liverpool as a free agent had raised hopes that a move to Celtic Park could be a possibility this summer. The club had signed Kieran Tierney under similar circumstances last year.
But unfortunately, it looks like that is not on the cards. Instead, Robertson looks to be headed for Tottenham Hotspur if everything works out for them in the Premier League relegation battle.
According to Fabrizio Romano, Tottenham have a verbal agreement to sign Robertson in June 2026, with all terms in place. Nothing is signed or sealed yet as staying in the Premier League will be a key factor ahead of proceeding.
As remarkable as it sounds, there is a realistic scenario in which Tottenham Hotspur could get relegated. They are currently in 18th, albeit having played a game less than West Ham United in 17th.
That is quite the situation to be in for a team that has played Champions League football this season. And it underlines that Ange Postecoglou actually did not do that bad a job with what he was working with.
They do have a new manager in place now in Roberto De Zerbi. The highly regarded Italian head coach will be hoping to guide Tottenham Hotspur to safety. And with the squad that they have, it would still be a surprise if they end up getting relegated.
So, there is a decent chance that Robertson ends up at Sputs. But even if he does not, it does look like he is keen on staying in the Premier League. So, the dreams of seeing him in a Celtic shirt are as good as over, at least for the time being.
