Celtic fans have reacted to the official announcement that makes things tougher this summer.
After what has been a frustrating season for Celtic, they are somehow about to finish it on a high. Martin O'Neill's side managed to win the league on the final day of the season by defeating Hearts in front of the Parkhead support.
Even though the Hoops might not have played brilliant football this season, this league title triumph might go down as the most memorable one in the eyes of many, because of the manner in which it was won.
Also, it was O'Neill leading the side once again. A nostalgia trip for a section of the fanbase and a chance to live the old days for the newer generation.
Now, Celtic will be getting ready to take on Dunfermline Athletic in the final of the Scottish Cup. Neil Lennon manages the Championship side. In many ways, this could be the perfect ending to O'Neill's managerial career.
In the summer, Celtic will look to bring in a new manager with O'Neill expected to step down. Unfortunately, one of their primary targets is no longer available.
Jens Berthel Askou was believed to be one of the frontrunners for the Celtic job. He had impressed immensely as his Motherwell team had played some of the best football in the Scottish league this season.
That had seen him being linked with the Celtic job. But rumours broke out yesterday that Toulouse had made their move. And now, that has already been made official. Either the French side have moved with lighting speed or this has been in the works in the background for a while without breaking into the media.
Naturally, quite a few Celtic fans were not happy with the outcome as they would have been hoping to see Askou replace O'Neill in the Parkhead hot seat next season. One wrote: "Massive blow and gutted he’s left a great manager and his style of football was the best in the league. Hope Motherwell get a good replacement."
Another added: "As a Celtic fan - the best manager I’ve seen in Scotland since Ange, an absolute joy to watch. Best of luck to him, I expect him to be in the English Premier League very soon."
Well, that is that when it comes to the Askou to Celtic saga. He won't be heading to Parkhead this summer.
Obviously, Askou is not the only manager Celtic have been linked with in recent times. The likes of Robbie Keane, Roberto Martinez and a few others are believed to be on their radar as well. That being said, it is always good to have options and one door has completely shut with the Motherwell boss heading to Toulouse. We can only wish him the best of luck.
As for Celtic, their search for a manager will continue. Of course, it is very possible that the club could even make a move for someone who has not been named in the media so far. We can only wait and watch how this plays out. But for now, the focus has to be on the task at hand, which is the Scottish Cup final against Dunfermline Athletic.
Also, let's not completely rule out the possibility of O'Neill staying. While the manager has always maintained that he expects this to be the end, he has never fully closed the door on continuing in the post beyond this season.
