Andy Robertson's Liverpool exit has been officially announced, and that has come with growing Celtic rumours.
Last summer, Celtic brought back Kieran Tierney after he became a free agent. Not many would have expected the Scotsman to return to Parkhead in his prime years. But after spending six seasons as an Arsenal player, the left-back decided to return home.
Now, Celtic have the chance to bring another brilliant Scottish left-back home. Of course, we are talking about none other than Andy Robertson.
Robertson never made it to the senior ranks at Celtic. But he was part of the youth system at one point.
Even more importantly, he grew up supporting Celtic and has never made a secret of it. In the past, he has talked about dreaming of playing for the Hoops one day. Well, his chance might be here.
Robertson has announced that he will be leaving Liverpool at the end of the season. That opens up the door to a move to Celtic.
Amid all this, some past comments from Robertson have emerged in the media as well. According to the Daily Record, he had said back in 2022 while discussing a possible move to Celtic someday:
"Every time I watch Celtic, I consider it.
“When you watch them and see a packed Celtic Park... as a fan you always have that dream. Ideally I want to finish my career here at Liverpool. If I can stay at the top of my game, at the top of the tree my whole career, that’s the route I want to go down.
“But also, when I look at Celtic and when I was growing up, I was thinking I wanted to give them my best years. When I was at Queen’s Park I had a dream of still playing with Celtic and always dreamed of giving my best years to Celtic.
“And now I don’t want to go as a 34 or 35-year-old old guy that my uncles start hating on me because I can’t move any more! Time will tell. I’m very much a person who lives in the moment.
“I don’t look too far ahead and I don’t often look back. There will be a time for that.”
Well, Robertson has the chance to make that dream come true. 2022 was not a lifetime ago. And curiously, it all fits the timeline.
He is 32 years old right now. And while he might not be getting enough chances at Liverpool, he still has football left in the tank.
Robertson could easily go to the Serie A or Ligue 1, and play for a top club. In fact, there might be some in the Premier League willing to give him a chance. There were rumours of interest from Tottenham Hotspur in the winter transfer window.
It is very much up to Robertson. That being said, if he does not join Celtic now, it is likely that he will never pull on the famous green-and-white jersey.
Of course, the presence of Kieran Tierney does make things difficult. Where would Celtic fit two world-class left-backs in the same team? Would they be willing to share game time? Could the Hoops come up with a different solution?
Steve Clarke has been able to play them together for Scotland. And there is a possibility that he could end up being the next Celtic manager, you never know.
If Celtic did not have Tierney, there is a good chance they would have been all over this situation. But under the current circumstances, signing Robertson seems a bit unlikely, to be honest. Never say never though.
