The manager has suddenly opened the door to a return amid rumours linking him with the Celtic job.

We are quite far along the international break and there is still little clarity when it comes to the managerial situation at Celtic. What does the long-term future hold for Martin O'Neill?

For the time being, it looks like O'Neill will continue in the Parkhead hot seat. Otherwise, an exit would have been announced already.

But that does not mean that he is guaranteed to see the season out. If results do not improve, the Northern Irishman might very well decide to bring an end to his time at Parkhead.

At the end of the day, he might prefer to protect his legacy over continuing as Celtic manager if the results continue on a downward trajectory and the fans are unhappy.

At the same time, at 74 years of age, there have been some question marks about the manager's health as well. But if he does end up leaving, who would replace him?

Irishman hints at managerial return amid Celtic rumours

One of the names to be linked with the Celtic job is Roy Keane. Now, for some reason, the Irish legend continues to be involved whenever there is speculation around a new manager, although he has been out of coaching for a long time.

Even more interestingly, a large portion of his coaching career was spent working as an assistant to none other than O'Neill. Keane's last post was at Nottingham Forest.

Keane has found substantial success as a pundit since. But recently, he hinted that he would be open to the idea of a return to management.

According to Manchester Evening News, Keane while speaking to Micah Richards in a Sky Sports Premier League A-Z feature: "Strangely enough, at weekends when I'm watching games, there are teams I watch and you go, 'I think I could go in there and do a job.'

"But it's mostly at weekends. It's not through the week. It's not Monday morning when I'm having my scrambled egg at the local cafe, just reading a paper.

"All these managers driving up and down the motorways and stresses. But yeah, I do. I think there's always something there.

"The pilot light is still on for something. If someone gave me a phone call and told you, you know what? Who knows? It's going to be unlikely."

Could Roy Keane get Celtic job if Martin O'Neill Leaves?

The timing of the comments is curious to say the least. They have come at a time when there is growing uncertainty around the Celtic post, while Keane is one of the names to be linked with it.

If the Celtic board do end up hiring Keane at any point, it would be a move that would be heavily scrutinised to say the very least.

At the end of the day, this is someone who has not been a head coach since 2011. And his only two roles came at Sunderland and Ipswich Town.

Yes, Keane was a phenomenal player. One of the best in Premier League history. But does that automatically qualify him for the Celtic job, especially since he has been out of management for so long?
