Marcelo Saracchi's agent has confirmed some news that will not go down well with a large section of the Celtic support.

News broke yesterday that Celtic had held talks with Marcelo Saracchi's representatives to sign him on a permanent basis. It was also suggested that the Hoops were ready conclude a deal and make him the club's first signing of the summer transfer window.

Saracchi had spent the season on loan from Boca Juniors. And while he was not a regular starter, he impressed whenever given a chance.

It feels like a no-brainer of a move for Celtic to sign him permanently. They need a reliable cover option at left-back owing to Kieran Tierney's long history of injury problems.

Unfortunately, it looks like the suggestion that a move was close to taking place was wide of the mark.

According to a report from Michael Shearer for CeltsAreHere, Saracchi’s agent, Marcelo Tejera, has told the outlet that Celtic have not been in touch about a permanent move for the Uruguayan international left-back. He said:

“The first thing that needs to happen is for the club’s CEO to tell me of their interest in the player. And that never happened.”

To be honest, that is a confusing stance on the part of Celtic. There are not many reasons why the club should not look to sign Saracchi this summer.

Saracchi has already proven himself as a viable option in Scottish football. In fact, many Celtic fans felt he should have been starting ahead of Tierney based on performances.

He is also available this summer. Boca Juniors are believed to be keen on finding him a new permanent home.

And thirdly, if reports are on the mark, then the transfer fee is not going to be high. Saracchi could be available for a figure in the region of £2.5 million.

He pretty much ticks every box that the club could be looking for when it comes to signing a cover left-back for Tierney this summer.

Yet, for some reason, it looks like Celtic have not made contact looking to sign him on a permanent basis. That is a head-scratcher of a decision on their part.

If Celtic do want to get it done, they might need to move quickly because time is of the essence when it comes to signing Saracchi.

Boca Juniors seem to be interested in getting a deal over the line as soon as possible. And there is believed to be interest in clubs from the MLS and Europe.

So, there is a genuine possibility that somebody could swoop in and sign him from right under Celtic's nose. That is if the Hoops are even interested in a deal in the first place.
