If Celtic win the league, Kelechi Iheanacho's 99th goal vs Motherwell will go down in club lore.
It was always expected to be a tight game. Motherwell have arguably been the best footballing team in Scotland this season. Beating them away from home is not an easy task. And they had already beaten the Rangers and drawn against Hearts recently.
At this point in the season, it is about finding a way though. That is exactly what Celtic did. After falling behind, it was Daizen Maeda who drew them level with a fantastic finish from a tight angle.
Benjamin Nygren's selection had been criticised but he cropped up with an important goal to put Celtic ahead.
Motherwell did find a way back and made it 2-2 late on. And for a while, it looked like Celtic were going to draw the game.
That would mean that they would need to win on the final day by three goals, an almost impossible task considering how shaky they have been defensively and how ineffective they have looked in attack all season.
Fortunately, it did not come down to that. Celtic were awarded a penalty in added time and Kelechi Iheanacho made no mistake from the spot.
It was a stone-cold finish from the Nigerian striker, who has been a supreme sub for Celtic in recent weeks, scoring one winner after another off the bench. This time around, he delayed his kick to send the goalkeeper the wrong way before finishing calmly into the other corner to secure all three points.
It is safe to say that the fans were delighted with Iheanacho after the game. One wrote: "I feel like Iheanacho has got proper main character syndrome and it’s exactly what we need."
Another wrote: "Kelechi Iheanacho was a last ditch free agent punt from Brendan Rodgers after a shambolic transfer window in the summer of 2025. Potentially one of the most important moments in Celtic history."
That sets up a date with destiny for Celtic and Martin O'Neill, who will surely be managing his last league game and for the last time at Parkhead against Hearts. He has the opportunity to go out as a champion of Scotland. It does not get better than that.
As for Iheanacho, if Celtic win the title from here, he will go down in club folklore. He has come off the bench and won so many games over the last few weeks that we have lost count by now. There might not have been a better impact sub in world football over the last couple of months.
Celtic have the option to hand him a one-year extension and he has most certainly earned that, no matter what happens in the final game of the campaign against Hearts.
