Celtic fans will like the fresh up surrounding the club as we head towards the pre-season.

The World Cup is in full swing right now and it would be an understatement to say that these have been a few big days. Lionel Messi scored a hat-trick last night. Kylian Mbappe and Erling Haaland got braces. So, the eyes of the planet have been on the tournament and rightfully so. That being said, Celtic fans will be keeping an eye on club matters as well.

Celtic have confirmed the return of Martin O'Neill on a permanent basis after his double-winning campaign as interim boss.

But remarkably, while Celtic have been able to get O'Neill's appointment over the line, they have not been successful in agreeing terms when it comes to his coaching staff.

There is uncertainty around the futures of both Shaun Maloney and Mark Fotheringham, two coaches who played a major part in the club's comeback triumphs last season.

Ideally, most Celtic fans would want to see them stay on. But there have been suggestions that they have been offered lower wages.

If the information is indeed accurate, why would they do that? Well, I have no idea. But for anybody who has followed Celtic for a considerable length of time, the speculation does not come as a surprise.

On top of that, news broke out earlier that West Bromwich Albion had agreed on a deal to bring in Gavin Strachan, which will further weaken Celtic's coaching unit.

Fortunately, there is some positive news on the other front. According to The Scottish Sun, Celtic chiefs continue contract talks with Maloney and Fotheringham.

The report states that talks are ongoing with Maloney and Fotheringham, and that O’Neill is keen to have both on board.

It is not hard to understand why that might be the case. O'Neill was happy enough to admit that both coaches played an integral part in the club's success last season.

At 74 years of age, O'Neill does have to rely on his coaches more than he would have in his prime. So, having a settled team is important for any sort of continuity.

It is a positive that talks are still ongoing and that communication has not broken down so far. Fans will be hoping that an agreement is reached between both parties at some point in the near future.

Of course, this might be taking away a ton of energy when it comes to focusing on the summer transfer window, which promises to be vital for Celtic. The Hoops need to rebuild their squad and need to bring in reinforcements in multiple positions.
