Celtic have been linked with the Tottenham Hotspur midfielder in recent times and is next club now seems to be clear.

Celtic have signed quite a few players from Tottenham Hotspur in recent years. A couple of names that come to mind immediately are Joe Hart and Cameron Carter-Vickers.

Of course, Hart spent the last three years of his career at Celtic before retiring. Carter-Vickers is now completed five seasons at Parkhead, longer than most would have expected, although he has spent a lot of time out injured as well.

Going into this summer transfer window, Celtic have been linked with another Tottenham Hotspur player as well.

That player is Alfie Devine. The midfielder spent the last season on loan at Preston North End and was a standout performer for them. That seemed to catch the eye of Celtic.

Celtic's midfield is expected to undergo a lot of changes this summer. Players like Reo Hatate, Arne Engels, Benjamin Nygren and Paulo Bernardo have all been linked with moves away.

So, Celtic could need to bring in some replacements as soon as possible. And as a result, the rumoured interest in Devine made sense.

Unfortunately, it does not look like a move to Parkhead is on the cards for the Tottenham Hotspur midfielder.

According to Alan Nixon (via 67 Hail Hail), Devine is expected to join Preston North End permanently.

Preston North End had decided to activate the option to buy as part of their loan deal last week. But they have had to wait to complete a move because of personal terms. Now, it looks like they are going to be sorted as well.

Devine looks happy enough to continue with the Championship club, where he is coming off the best season of his career.

Is that the right decision on his part? Or should he have aimed higher? We are not certain. But it looks like it is time for Celtic to look elsewhere as they look to bring in reinforcements in the middle of the park.

Obviously, Celtic can completely focus on their squad rebuild now, after news broke out that the club had agreed a one-year deal with Martin O'Neill for the Northern Irishman to continue on as manager.

O'Neill won the league and cup double as interim manager last season. But that did not exactly mean that he would get the job at 74 years of age.

Robbie Keane was believed to be the frontrunner but eventually, the club had no other choice but to move away from that pursuit as it became clear that the fans did not want it.
