Celtic have now been handed a chance to sign the Premier League midfielder in a £6 million deal this summer.
Celtic have not been able to complete any major signings so far this summer. That will need to change as soon as possible. Let's not forget that the Hoops were nowhere near the mark in the previous season, although they did win the league and cup double.
Also, there are some areas where the Hoops could be significantly weaker this summer, due to impending exits. Midfield could be atop that list.
Reo Hatate is almost certain to leave after barely featuring in the title run-in last season. As for Paulo Bernardo, he got even less game time and needs a change of scenery.
There has been speculation surrounding the future of Arne Engels as well. Every summer, there is a big Celtic exit, and the Belgian could be the one for this transfer window.
Of course, that would leave the Hoops needing to strengthen in the middle of the park. Interestingly, it looks like they now have a chance to sign a Tottenham Hotspur player after an expected move did not happen.
Celtic handed chance to sign Tottenham Hotspur midfielder
Alfie Devine spent last season on loan at Preston North End. He did well enough to catch the eye of clubs like Celtic.
In fact, Martin O'Neill was spotted attending a Preston North End game last season. It did not take people long to put two and two together.
Preston North End did have an option to sign Devine and it is believed that they were eager to make the move permanent. Yet nothing has happened yet and such options usually expire on July 1.
The fact that the move has not happened yet might suggest that Devine is not particularly keen on a move to Preston North End on a permanent basis. And if that is the case, that does open the door for Celtic to make their move.
How much would it take to sign Alfie Devine from Tottenham?
It is believed that a transfer fee in the region of £6 million could be enough to convince Tottenham Hotspur to part ways with Devine this summer.
That was the maximum they would have gotten, including add-ons, if Preston North End had been able to sign him using their option to buy.
With eight goals and eight assists for Preston North End last season, Devine was certainly able to enhance his reputation. It remains to be seen if that leads to Spurs asking for a bigger transfer fee.
Celtic have signed quite a few players from Tottenham Hotspur in recent times. Cameron Carter-Vickers, Joe Hart and Tobi Oluwayemi come to mind. Could Devine be next on that list? Time shall tell.
