Portuguese talent Gustavo Sa has landed in Athens, spurning Premier League interest to join Olympiacos. Here are his first statements as a new Red and White player.
Olympiacos' new signing Gustavo Sa made his first statements to the press after landing in Athens to complete his transfer from Famalicao.
Speaking to the press following his arrival in Piraeus to sign for Olympiacos, midfielder Gustavo Sa talked about how he would take no time to settle at the Greek side since he has his fellow countrymen and Portuguese-speaking players. "I'm very excited. It will be very nice, I know I'm coming to the biggest team in Greece. The fact that there are a lot of Portuguese players and some Brazilians playing here, Tsikinho, Zota and Carmo, who I know from the Portuguese league and we've played against, played a big role and was a big factor in me coming here," remarked Sa.
I can play in the 8 and 10 positions. I will do whatever the coach asks me to do, and I think I am a very intelligent player. I work for the team, and I don't just think about myself. These are the best values in my game.”
Sa's arrival is expected to be on a loan deal from the Evangelos Marinakis-led Premier League club Nottingham Forest, who will acquire him from Famalicao for a sum of €20 million. His loan deal could end in January next year, but everything will depend on his performances and Nottingham Forest's requirements during that period.
As per an earlier report on Roundtable, the 21-year-old had rejected a move to Saudi Arabian side Al-Ittihad when Famalicao reportedly agreed on transfer fees with the Middle Eastern club. However, the rejection made it clear that Sa wants to stay in Europe, and clubs such as West Ham United, Nottingham Forest and Olympiacos upped their negotiations.
It is believed that The Hammerers almost had a done deal with the Portuguese outfit when the Marinakis Football Group project seemed to be more appealing for the player to gain exposure. His chances of starting the new season with The Tricky Trees have turned to zero now as he has landed in Athens. However, the length of his stay will entirely depend on club president Evangelos Marinakis, who leads both Olympiacos and Forest.
This is set to be Thrylos' second signing in a day after officially announcing Stefan Ortega as their new goalkeeper. The German international rejected Arsenal to play a more influential role as the first-choice man for Olympiacos, who are ready for the UEFA Champions League third qualifying round fixture against NEC in August.
