Piastri Loses Positions at Monza for Impeding Lawson

The starting order for the Italian Grand Prix underwent a significant modification after qualifying. Oscar Piastri, who had achieved a meritorious third place in Saturday's session, was penalized with three grid positions for impeding Liam Lawson during Q2. The McLaren driver will thus drop to sixth place, promoting the Ferraris of Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton as well as Max Verstappen's Red Bull.

The stewards' decision came after analyzing the images, telemetry data and listening to the statements of both drivers and their respective teams. The incident occurred in the final stages of Q2 when Piastri was leaving the pits and encountered traffic at Monza's first chicane. Lawson, who was on a fast lap, was surprised by the McLaren's presence and lost valuable time that prevented him from accessing Q3.

The stewards' document explained the details of the decision: "When leaving the pits, the driver of car 81 (Piastri) was warned that 'Verstappen, Lawson and Sainz are passing, Sainz has entered the pits, only Verstappen and Lawson, be careful with them when you join.' The driver of car 81 stated that he was not alerted that Verstappen and Lawson were on push laps, but he realized when he was already almost at turn 1 that Verstappen was on a fast lap" detailed the statement.

Piastri's maneuver to avoid Verstappen was what paradoxically caused the incident with Lawson: "He reduced speed significantly and stayed to the right to allow Verstappen to pass but could do nothing to avoid hindering Lawson, who was coming very close behind" the report continued. The stewards determined that the action was "inadvertent and therefore unnecessary" but sufficient to apply the penalty.

Piastri himself acknowledged the complexity of the situation: "It was a complicated situation to manage, I was coming out of the pits and they told me Lawson and Verstappen were coming but I had to brake quite hard to get out of Max's way and then I got stuck in a very uncomfortable position with Liam" explained the Australian after the session.

Lawson, for his part, did not hide his frustration: "To be honest we really should have had the speed to get into Q3 anyway. We had quite good pace yesterday and then today we lost some performance, overall the goal was obviously to try to help Max in Q3 and I never got there so it's not what we had planned but I think our qualifying was a bit compromised anyway" declared the New Zealander.

Piastri's penalty has a direct impact on the starting grid. Ferrari, which had already shown great pace throughout the weekend, will benefit from the promotion of its two drivers. Hamilton and Leclerc, who had qualified fourth and fifth, will now occupy third and fourth positions respectively, just behind the front row formed by the Mercedes of George Russell and Kimi Antonelli.

The move also benefits Verstappen, who moves up to fifth place. For Lawson, however, Piastri's penalty has a bittersweet taste. Although the New Zealander will be promoted on the grid, his own weekend is compromised by the substitution of Isack Hadjar and the Red Bull's performance problems.

The result of Monza qualifying leaves an even more open scenario for Sunday's race.
