Explaining why the Houston Astros should re-sign pitcher Bryan Abreu as he enters free agency.
The Houston Astros have a variety of key decisions to make when it comes to building the roster as well as the front office for the 2027 season, especially when it comes to the pitching staff and potentially re-signing pitcher Bryan Abreu.
On that note, Bleacher Report MLB writer Tim Kelly wrote a piece on 1 player every team should re-sign in 2026-2027 MLB free agency, and for the Astros, that player was Abreu.
First off, the main reason that the Astros should deeply consider re-signing Abreu is the fact that the performance of the bullpen throughout the season was very inconsistent, and while Abreu did struggle at times, he is someone Houston knows can perform well.
Now getting to Abreu's stats, Kelly noted a few important ones starting with the fact that from 2022 to 2025 Abreu posted a 2.30 ERA over 275 games which was very impressive, but he did struggle a bit in 2026 as he had ERA of 3.73 in 66 games which could end up making in more difficult for Abreu to get a larger contract than he could have had if his 2026 performance was on par with his play over the previous few seasons.
While Abreu did struggle in the overall sense in 2026, Kelly did mention that after the All-Star game he was tremendous as he appeared in 32 games and recorded a 1.71 ERA demonstrating his ability to bounce back and perform very despite a tough start to 2026.
After looking at Abreu's ERA it is also important to take a look at the other pitching stats, so let's do that.
Focusing on the 2026 season, Abreu had an overall record of 6-4 while pitching in 62.2 innings and allowing 44 hits, 28 runs, nine home runs, walking 41 batters, striking out 80 batters, and posting a WHIP of 1.36 as well as the previously mentioned ERA of 3.73.
So, when seeing the overall stats for Abreu it is does show that he has the ability to be a good pitcher and ultimately 2026 was a tough year for Houston's pitcher overall, so it is possible that he just had an off year and will be better in 2027.
Going back to the idea of the Astros bringing Abreu back, it makes a ton of sense on the Houston side because with all the change that will happen this offseason, having some form of continuity could be very helpful and the fact that Abreu has been in the system for years and has proven to be reliable is something that benefit the Astros in 2027.
Also, with the inconsistency that Houston had in the bullpen, a player like Abreu, who has proven to be great and consistent other than some points in 2026, it just feels like something that should put the Astros in a decent position, whether they bring him back on a multi-year deal or even just a prove-it deal.
So, as this offseason progresses, it will be worth monitoring how the Astros choose to proceed with free agency, but specifically with Abreu, and whether they feel they can bring him back, and if they do bring him back, what kind of deal he may sign is something that will be interesting to see also because he could have a key impact for Houston in 2027 and potentially provide better depth in the bullpen than they had during the 2026 season.
