The St. Louis Cardinals are still in the middle of a top-to-bottom organization rebuild.
So far this year, the Cardinals traded All-Star closer Ryan Helsley at the 2025 trade deadline and dealt starting pitcher Sonny Gray to the Boston Red Sox this offseason.
St. Louis also is reported to be in trade conversations with various clubs centered around players such as second baseman Brendan Donovan, third baseman Nolan Arenado and first baseman Willson Contreras.
The Cardinals recently filled in the hole on the rotation left by the Gray trade by signing Dustin May, who last pitched for the Red Sox, to a one-year, $12.5 million contract with a $20 million mutual option for 2027.

May is a solid addition to St. Louis' starting rotation. He's been plagued with injuries since he made his major league debut in 2019.
This past season was May's first with more than 14 appearances and 10 starts in a single season. In 25 outings (23 starts) with the Los Angeles Dodgers and Boston, May posted a 4.96 ERA with 123 strikeouts in 132.1 innings pitched.
For his career, May has a 3.86 ERA and has fanned 297 batters in 324 innings across 71 appearances (57 starts).
Even with the addition of May, St. Louis is still in the market for starting pitching.
A story published by Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch stated the Cardinals are still looking to add another arm to the rotation, specifically an experienced one.
They have also expressed interest in pursuing a veteran starter at some point this winter to provide additional stability to what will be a young staff.
This falls in line with St. Louis' asking price for players such as Donovan.
A former Cardinals pitcher, Lance Lynn, recently opined on the Cardinal Territory podcast that the organization should demand Seattle Mariners starting pitcher Bryce Miller in return for Donovan when discussing rumors the M's are the front-runners to land the 2025 All-Star.
St. Louis also acquired starter Richard Fitts from the Red Sox in the Gray trade.
According to Goold's report, the Cardinals have returners Matthew Liberatore, Michael McGreevy, May and Fitts on the rotation and are "eager" for reliever Kyle Leahy earn a spot on the rotation.
Leahy, who made his major league debut in 2023, posted a career-best 3.07 ERA and struck out 80 batters in 88 innings pitched across 62 appearances (one start) in 2025.
