Easton Shelton's breakout season has turned the unranked first baseman into one of the most intriguing under-the-radar prospects for the Los Angeles Dodgers.
For the Los Angeles Dodgers, taking a look at the Ontario Tower Buzzers, the organization's Single-A affiliate, reveals one of the more intriguing prospects in the farm system: 20-year-old first baseman Easton Shelton.
What Shelton has accomplished this season not only reflects the Dodgers' player development system but also highlights the organization's ability to identify overlooked talent.
After signing as an undrafted player, he has quickly become one of the more compelling stories in the farm system.
In many cases, standout performances at the lower levels of the minor leagues should be viewed with some caution. However, there is no denying what Shelton has accomplished this season. Through 81 games, he owns a .310 batting average, a .407 on-base percentage, an OPS well over 1.000, and 28 home runs.
Shelton's breakout season reached another milestone when he was named the California League Player of the Month for June.
The first baseman hit .329 with a .460 on-base percentage and a .722 slugging percentage during the month, leading the league with nine home runs, 27 RBIs, a .722 slugging percentage, and a 1.182 OPS.
He also finished second in on-base percentage, third in total bases, and fourth in walks with 18, further highlighting the impact he made at the plate.
Shelton has yet to be recognized as one of the Dodgers' top prospects, but his performance this season has been difficult to ignore. Compared to last year, he has made a significant jump across the board, an impressive development for a player who has yet to turn 21.
Again, evaluating players solely on production at the lower levels of the minor leagues is never easy. While those numbers should be taken with a degree of caution, they should not diminish just how impressive Shelton's season has been.
The Dodgers have consistently maintained one of baseball's strongest farm systems throughout their run of success.
While higher-profile prospects such as Josue De Paula, Zyhir Hope, Eduardo Quintero, Mike Sirota, and James Tibbs III understandably receive most of the attention, there are always players who emerge outside of those headline names.
Shelton is beginning to fit that mold.
His production has made him increasingly difficult to overlook, even without a spot among the organization's ranked prospects.
More importantly, his breakout reflects exactly what the Dodgers have built their player development reputation on: identifying talent, maximizing potential, and developing contributors throughout the system.
Whether Shelton ultimately carries this level of production to the upper levels remains to be seen, but his performance has undoubtedly made him one of the more intriguing unranked prospects in the Dodgers' organization. If he continues producing at this pace, the attention surrounding him will only continue to grow.
