Colorado Rockies starter Mason Adams got off to a rough start and that helped the Arizona Diamondbacks pick up another victory.
A day after the Colorado Rockies lost their 100th game this season, they were not able to find the win column on Wednesday night.
The Arizona Diamondbacks used a four-run first inning to propel them over Colorado 5-3 at Coors Field. Rockies starter Mason Adams was rocked for all four earned runs. Despite that rough beginning, Adams went six innings, giving up five hits, four runs (none earned), didn't walk a batter, and struck out eight.
Reliever Mike Manfredi worked two innings and gave up a run, then Jaden Hill worked a perfect ninth.
Diamondbacks jump out early
In the top of the first, Arizona's Ketel Marte reached base on a fielding error by outfielder Zach Veen. Marte made it all the way to second base, setting the Diamondbacks up in good position to get on the board.
Gabriel Moreno's RBI single brought Marte home for a 1-0 Diamondbacks lead. With two outs, Pavin Smith singled to left field and Moreno moved on up to second base. Nolan Arenado came up with an RBI single, scoring Moreno and giving Arizona a 2-0 advantage.
Corbin Carroll's two-run triple brought home Smith and Arenado. That was pretty much all of the offense that the Diamondbacks needed on Wednesday night. They did get one more run in the top of the eighth inning.
As for the Rockies, Adael Amador's double in the second inning scored Kyle Karros and put Colorado on the board at 4-1. Then, in the third inning, Hunter Goodman hit a sacrifice fly to left field and Ezequiel Tovar scored. That put Colorado within two runs at 4-2 at that point.
Manfredi surrenders home run
Manfredi, in the top of the eighth, gave up Tim Tawa's 11th home run this season and Arizona extended its lead to 5-2. Tovar smashed his 12th homer for Colorado in the bottom of the eighth, wrapping up the scoring at 5-3.
Colorado was 0-for-6 with runners in scoring position and left six total runners on base. Arizona was 3-for-5 with runners in scoring position and left two total runners on the basepaths at Coors Field.
On Thursday afternoon, the Rockies will finish their 2026 home schedule with the Diamondbacks. Starting Friday, Colorado wraps things up with a three-game weekend series against the Chicago White Sox in Chicago.
It will be tough to see this team finish, yet again, with 100-plus losses. The Rockies wanted to show improvement this season, and that has happened in some areas. Next season, Colorado will look to avoid another 100-defeat finish.
