Cole Carrigg slammed two home runs and Kyle Freeland made his return to the Colorado Rockies as an offensive onslaught carried them over the San Diego Padres.
For as much as the 2026 MLB season has not been a good one if you look at the Colorado Rockies' record, the ballclub has shown a lot of reasons to feel better about the future.
Cole Carrigg, who keeps on piling up highlight-reel material, was 4-for-5 and smashed two home runs as the Rockies defeated the San Diego Padres 9-3 on Tuesday night. Finally, the eight-game losing streak has come to an end. That three-run homer came at the end of a 13-pitch battle, too.
Carrigg finished with five RBIs, putting a fitting note on his best game in his young MLB career. He now has 45 RBIs this season, which is notable because he didn't start this season up with the MLB club.
This win also put the stops on the Padres' eight-game winning streak, which isn't good as San Diego is in National League Wild Card discussion.
Freeland returns to Rockies' rotation
Meanwhile, Kyle Freeland returned to the Rockies' rotation after spending time on the Injured List. Freeland worked the first four innings, and Ryan Feltner came on to take up a few more innings as well.
The entire Rockies' starting lineup recorded at least one hit.
This type of game must make Rockies manager Warren Schaeffer happy as he's been working hard to insert his own culture into the team.
In Freeland's four innings of work, he gave up eight hits, three earned runs, didn't walk a batter and struck out three. But Freeland surrendered three home runs to Padres hitters.
For Feltner, in five innings of work, he only gave up three hits, walked one, and struck out five. He picked up the victory in relief of Freeland on Tuesday night at Coors Field.
Colorado put together lots of hits
Right fielder Troy Johnston went 3-for-3 with two RBIs and scored one run. Center fielder-left fielder Jake McCarthy put together a 2-for-5 night at the plate, too, and first baseman TJ Rumfield had himself a 2-for-4 night hitting, too.
Colorado was 4-for-10 with runners in scoring position and the Rockies left eight total runners on base.
After the Padres jumped out to a 2-0 lead, the Rockies put up two runs in the bottom of the third, a five-run spot in the sixth inning, and two more in the seventh.
So, Colorado goes to 56-95 overall and still needs to just lose four more games in order to avoid 100 losses. If the Rockies can put together more wins like this one on Tuesday night going forward, then that 100-loss talk can all go away.
Roster updates
Obviously, Freeland was back on the mound after being reinstated from the 15-day Injured List. But there were some other moves that the Rockies made on Tuesday.
Catcher Braxton Fulford was recalled from Triple-A Albuquerque, while right-handed pitcher Blas Castaño and infielder Vimael Machín were sent back down to the Isotopes.
