As the Chicago Bulls ride a 6-1 start to the season, another encouraging sign emerged: Coby White is back on track toward returning to the lineup.
White appeared at the team's training facility and spoke to the media on Thursday. The guard has been sidelined since suffering the calf injury in mid-August, though he was seen doing drills and sprints at the United Center before Tuesday's dramatic comeback win over the Philadelphia 76ers.
"I feel good physically, no setbacks," White said. "I've been running a lot, a lot, a lot, so it's been good. Just trying to make sure I'm staying conditioned, so I've been pushing it a lot just to build a tolerance in my calf."
While White didn't provide a specific target date for his return, he will ramp up practice participation next week, including live 2-on-2 and 3-on-3 work, though the current schedule's density has limited full practice opportunities.
The injury has tested White's patience. He admitted this is the most serious soft tissue injury he's experienced in his career, outside of shoulder surgery. During his rehabilitation, he said he "probably practiced a little too long" and felt some symptoms, leading to what he called a "minor setback" that extended his re-evaluation period.
"It's definitely frustrating, because it's something that's just different for me," White said. "I've never experienced soft tissue injury like this. Most of the time, I'm hurt. I'm big on like 'alright, I do this, I do this, I check this box, and I'll be back on this date,'. This one is more so, like, you got to build strength. You got to be cognizant—how are you feeling all the time on the court?"
White also clarified there's no concern about his Achilles tendon. He said his calf remains strong through testing, and tendon scans show positive results that keep him out of danger.
Despite his absence, White has been energized watching the Bulls' hot start. The team currently sits atop the Eastern Conference standings, defying preseason expectations.
"I'm very excited to get back obviously, just the way the team is playing, playing for each other," White said. "You still got to stay patient at the same time, and you don't want to rush anything."
White expressed confidence that his playing style will fit seamlessly into the Bulls' current identity once he returns. He emphasized that building this culture didn't happen overnight, crediting years of development under Billy Donovan's system.
"Building a culture takes time, building the way you want to play takes time, building the identity takes time," White said. "This didn't happen overnight. This didn't happen this training camp. It happened two years ago."
The Bulls face a challenging upcoming stretch, traveling to face the Bucks (Nov. 7) and the Cavaliers (Nov. 8) in back-to-back road games before returning home to host the Spurs on Nov. 10.
