The Washington Wizards have officially locked down a veteran presence in the backcourt with Trae Young agreeing to a contract extension
The Trae Young question has officially been answered with the Washington Wizards cementing a veteran presence in the backcourt.
The Wizards have agreed to a four year extension with star point guard Trae Young on a deal worth approximately $212 million, per Shams Charania of ESPN. The fourth year of his contract will reportedly also carry a player option.
The news was an expected step in his path toward finalizing a longer solution at this stage in his career after reports pointed to the Wizards as the favorite to agree to re-sign him to a "very large" deal despite reports of interest from teams around the league. That included the Miami Heat with a report that he was a backup 'big fish' target for the organization, but those talks would have been contingent on Young opting into his deal. Young officially declined his option last Wednesday, June 17 before finalizing his future ahead of the official start of free agency.
Young was initially projected to sign a three year deal worth roughly $40 million annually with the new deal considerably more annually, but it also locks down an important piece in the backcourt - and with a player that has expressed continued interest in staying in DC.
While clarifying that the Wizards were the destination, not just Atlanta's trade partner, Young expressed his interest in sticking in Washington long-term ahead of his player-option deadline. General manager Will Dawkins has echoed similar sentiments during his interviews while pointing to his fit on and off the floor. Fans have grown to appreciate Young embracing the city in his short stint with the organization while they look ahead to a full season in a Wizards uniform.
On a minute restriction across five games, Young averaged 15.2 points and 6.2 assists while shooting nearly 60% from the floor, 43% from the field and over 70% from the free throw line. Yet unlike his brief stint with the team during the 2025-26 season, Young will take the floor with a full supporting cast after the Wizards battled injuries throughout the regular season.
The news of Young's new deal with the Wizards also comes one day before the organization gets the chance to make its selection with the top overall pick with all eyes fixated on whether former BYU star AJ Dybantsa materializes into the selection as been speculated since the draft lottery was set. Washington will also enter the draft with a pair of second round selections to work with as general manager Will Dawkins owns the 51st and 60th picks, while reports have swirled that the front office could also acquire an additional first round pick in a potential draft night move.
