The Miami Hurricanes' defense rebuilds, chasing elite four-star safety Zayden Gamble. He decides Saturday between four top programs.

The Miami Hurricanes balance out a busy schedule after a historic NFL Draft. Three linemen from the program, edge rusher Rueben Bain Jr., offensive tackle Francis Mauigoa, and edge rusher Akheem Mesidor, were selected within the top 32 picks, a first in its history. However, the high school recruiting trail remains active as Zayden Gamble is set to make an official announcement on Saturday, April 25.

The prospect is a four-star safety from Fort Lauderdale, Florida, who currently attends St. Thomas Aquinas High School in Broward County. Gamble has recorded 92 total tackles, 70 solos and 22 assists, three tackles for loss, seven interceptions, including a pick-six in 27 total games over three seasons.

Four programs were named as finalists ahead of the decision: Florida Gators, Ohio State Buckeyes, Notre Dame Fighting Irish, and Hurricanes.

Gamble is listed at 6-1, 190 pounds, and ranked 177th nationally, 13th among safeties, and 19th in the state of Florida for the 2027 recruiting class, according to Rivals Industry Rankings. He received offers and interest from numerous other programs, such as the Florida State Seminoles, South Florida Bulls, Texas A&M Aggies, Oklahoma Sooners, Oregon Ducks, Washington Huskies, Ole Miss Rebels, Missouri Tigers, Michigan Wolverines, LSU Tigers, and Virginia Tech Hokies, among others.

The homegrown recruit is capable of playing either at cornerback or free safety. Hurricanes safety coach Will Harris has been the primary recruiter for Gamble on behalf of the program, especially after defensive pass game coordinator and defensive backs coach Zac Etheridge departed, accepting a job with the Arizona Cardinals.

The versatility of Gamble is similar to what Jakobe Thomas showed throughout last season.

Coming off a National Championship appearance, the Hurricanes finished with a fifth-ranked scoring defense. It was a significant improvement after finishing 70 the previous year. Defensive coordinator Corey Hetherman installed a new system built around physicality, violence, and resilience.

Gamble made several unofficial visits with the Hurricanes compared to the other programs in the running, which could be an early indicator in which direction he goes come Saturday. The opportunity to land another homegrown recruit continues a strong trend around Coral Gables, Florida.

The Hurricanes are on pace to finish with a top-10 recruiting class, despite the decommitments of four-star wide receiver Ah’Mari Stevens, who landed with the LSU Tigers, and three-star offensive lineman Zaquan Linton. They still have other highly-touted prospects, such as Nick Lennear, Sean Tatum, and Israel Abrams.

Gamble could join the group and help solidify the Hurricanes’ future.
