Tyran Stokes, the consensus No. 1 pick in the 2027 NBA draft, chose Kansas over Kentucky in a heated recruiting battle for the star.
One of the most riveting recruiting battles in recent college basketball history came to a close, as top senior in the country Tyran Stokes announced his commitment to the Kansas Jayhawks next season, handing Bill Self a second straight projected No. 1 NBA draft pick. His commitment is a defining moment for the Jayhawks, as Stokes is a generational talent that could help spring the program back into contention for national titles.
The battle had the Kentucky Wildcats initially leading the race back in the fall for Stokes, but Kansas swooped in midseason and by all accounts look to be the frontrunners. Some back and forth transpired including a visit to the Wildcats after the season, but the Jayhawks were ultimately able to fend off their opponent and land their second straight five-star commit in the 2026 recruiting class alongside point guard Taylen Kinney. With the addition of the 6-foot-7 Stokes, Kansas now has the No. 2 recruiting class in the nation.
Here is the full story from Jayhawks Roundtable writer Liam Carson on the major commitment, including some intel that has been transpiring for the last few weeks in that recruiting battle for Stokes.
The small forward Stokes is looking to be the top pick in the 2027 NBA draft, averaging 22.4 points, 10.2 rebounds, and 3.7 assists per game in the Nike EYBL circuit, where he shot 51 percent on field goals and 36 percent from the three.
What does it all mean for Kansas? Stokes would follow Darryn Peterson as the consecutive projected top pick under Self, and the program has a preseason All-American to build around as a cornerstone in Stokes. After four straight seasons without appearing in the Sweet 16, the Jayhawks hope that Stokes’ arrival will heighten expectations for a real run in 2026-27.
