The Sooners solidified their NFL-style front office by locking down a premier talent evaluator, ensuring the architect behind Oklahoma's recent playoff run remains in Norman long-term

Oklahoma has officially secured the most important hires of the Brent Venables era. According to Sooner Scoop, the Sooners have signed General Manager Jim Nagy to a new 4-year, $4.6 million contract.

Nagy came to Norman in February 2025 after seven years running the Senior Bowl. OU originally lured him away with a $750,000 salary, but he’s now set to make $1 million in 2026 with $100,000 annual raises.

That puts him among the highest-paid general managers in college football, and he’s earned every penny.

What stands out about Nagy is how visible and forward-facing he is. He holds his own press conferences, does photo shoots with official visitors alongside Venables, and has basically treated the OU football department like a real NFL front office.

In today’s world of NIL and the transfer portal, that kind of professional structure matters a lot.

His impact has been immediate and obvious. Oklahoma went from 6-7 in 2024 to making the College Football Playoff in 2025. The 2027 high school recruiting class currently ranks No. 4 in the On3 Composite, the program’s highest finish in over 20 years if it holds.

Athletic director Roger Denny explained why keeping Nagy was a priority: “It was critical. You see what they’re doing, the results speak for themselves. But the thing that folks don’t necessarily see is the way he and his staff have come in and really integrated themselves so seamlessly with our coaching staff, and when you combine the work they’re doing on the evaluation and negotiation and the transactional side of it along with the work that our coaches do recruiting, it’s really a tremendous advantage for us. And we want to preserve that advantage as long as we can.”

Nagy leads a deep staff that includes assistant GMs Lake Dawson and Taylor Redd, director of player personnel Drew Hill, director of player personnel and retainment Stacey Ford, and several others in scouting, recruiting operations, and content roles.

This extension puts Nagy in elite company with other seven-figure GMs like North Carolina’s Michael Lombardi, Louisville’s Vince Marrow, Alabama’s Courtney Morgan, LSU’s Billy Glasscock, and USC’s Chad Bowden.

Nagy has been critical to Venables' success.

He allows Brent to focus on coaching the team and running the defense while Nagy handles roster construction, high school recruiting, portal work, and NIL management.

That separation of duties is how the best NFL teams operate, and it’s becoming more and more important in modern college football.

The results are already showing. Better roster management, stronger high school classes, smart portal additions, and a more professional operation overall.

Nagy has made Venables’ job easier and given Oklahoma a real structural advantage.

This extension sends a strong message that Oklahoma is committed to doing things the right way and keeping the people who are helping turn the program around.

If Nagy continues delivering like he has so far, this investment is going to pay off big time in the coming years.
