After nearly hitting 1,000 yards last season, the Sooners' standout receiver is eyeing Heisman-caliber numbers and a national title through refined route running and elite physical gains
Isaiah Sategna III dropped a video with OU Athletics talking about what he’s been focusing on this offseason, and it sounds like he’s putting in serious work to take that next step.
"The first thing I've been working on this offseason is my strength, keeping my speed obviously. But strength is a big thing I've been working on. I'd say my route detail, just my route running. Just polishing up the person that I am, you know in this past year. The growth is just insane you know. I can attribute that to Coach BV (Brent Venables). You know he just wants to really focus on the details."
He added that his biggest team goal this year is a national championship, and that his biggest personal goal is 1,500 receiving yards.
Sategna possesses a lean, athletic build with a wide wingspan that maximizes his catch radius despite average height. If he can keep his speed while adding strength, he will only make himself tough for defenders to cover him.
If John Mateer stays healthy and plays at a high level, 1,500 yards is attainable. Unlikely, but not impossible.
The last Oklahoma wide receiver to have 1,500 yards in a season was Dede Westbrook, who recorded 1,524 receiving yards during the 2016 season. Westbrook received a Heisman invitation and won the Big 12 Offensive Player of the Year award for the 2016 season.
Sategna had a strong first year with 965 yards and eight touchdowns. He fell just 35 yards short of 1,000.
His 2025 campaign in Norman included five games of 97 yards receiving or more (97 vs Temple, 127 vs Auburn, 131 vs Ole Miss, 109 vs Missouri, and 121 vs LSU).
With another year in the system and better chemistry with Mateer, he should be even more dangerous. The additions at wide receiver and tight end should actually help him by forcing defenses to spread their attention.
The Sooners have the pieces to have a really good offense in 2026. If Sategna can build on what he did last year, he could have a special season and put himself in the conversation for All-SEC honors and maybe even bigger things.
This feels like a big year for Sategna. Oklahoma has the pieces around him to make the offense dangerous. If he can build on what he did last year, he could be one of the best receivers in the country.
Sooner Nation should be excited about what Sategna can do in 2026. He’s got the tools and the opportunity. Now it’s time for him to go out and prove it.
