LUBBOCK, Texas - You know good things are happening when Texas Tech head coach Joey McGuire channels his inner Ric Flair.
Around this time of year, McGuire and staff are tirelessly hunting down players who have entered the transfer portal, which officially opened on Jan. 2. Just hours into the mad scramble that of the beginning of the offseason, McGuire's string of posts on social media tells us that he's "wheelin' and dealin.'"
The above post is in response to a trio of commitments out of the portal on Sunday. The nod to defense comes in reference to Texas Tech signing Kansas State linebacker Austin Romaine.
Romaine was once the Big 12 Co-Freshman of the Year, sharing the award with Red Raider veteran Ben Roberts. With All-American Jacob Rodriguez out of eligibility, uniting Romaine and Roberts in the center of the Tech defense is a major boost.
McGuire kept the party going with a commitment on the offensive end with two wide receiver additions: breakout Alabama State speedster Jalen Jones and Liberty's Donte Lee Jr. both committing to the Red Raiders.
Jones totaled 51 receptions for 1,167 yards (22.9 YPC) and nine touchdowns as an HBCU All-American for the Hornets.
Lee contributed 32 catches, 589 yards and five touchdowns for the Flames. It's another strong reinforcement for Texas Tech, who lost leading receiver Caleb Douglas to the NFL Draft process last week.
The next step is to find a quarterback who will sling them the rock.
There has been a ton of speculation around Cincinnati QB Brendan Sorsby, who ESPN has as the No. 1 overall recruit in the transfer portal. Sorsby came on a visit to Texas Tech last week before booking a ticket to Baton Rouge to meet with Lane Kiffin at LSU.
Sorsby's girlfriend recently announced her commitment to join the Texas Tech volleyball team, feeding the rumors about Brendan following suit and becoming the next quarterback of the Big 12 champs.
Another former Big 12 signal caller in the portal is Sam Leavitt, who has starred at Arizona State and is set to visit Lubbock at the start of this week. He wast most recently in Lexington touring Kentucky.
The general expectation is that Tech can land either of these top signal-callers.
Sorsby posted 3,380 scrimmage yards this season for the Bearcats, his second as a Cincy's starter as they've found success since joining the Big 12.
Leavitt has been one of the best quarterbacks in college football as the orchestrator of Arizona State's Big 12 title in 2024, but he saw a statistical regression this past season due to missing half of the conference slate with an injury.
Whoever may sign with Texas Tech, the Red Raiders are in good hands with an experienced passer as the next leader of McGuire's offense.
Now it's up to the stylin' and profilin' head coach to keep limousine ridin' and jet flyin' as transfer portal season gets into full swing.
