NBA Draft Insider Says UConn Star is a 'Lock' to Have Great Career cover image

Alex Karaban has had an excellent career for the Huskies.

According to noted NBA Draft Insider Jonathan Givony, University of Connecticut star Alex Karaban is not getting the proper credit from people nationally.

Speaking with Kevin O'Connor of Yahoo! Givony said he has Karaban listed in his Top 20 draft prospects, and he said he's a "lock" to have a long and successful career. He cited Karaban's great passing, excellent court awareness and collegiate success as reasons to believe in him. He also said he gets overlooked because he's played four years in college and is 23 years old. There's some kind of fatigue that sets in when you've been exposed to a player that much in college, evidently.

About Karaban

A four-year player from Massachusetts, Karaban has already helped the Huskies win two national championships in his career. Appearing in 124 games with 123 starts, he's also been a member of the All-Big East Team (2024-25).

He's averaged 12.3 ppg for his career while shooting 48 percent from the floor and 38 percent from three. He's also an 84 percent free-throw shooter who has averaged five rebounds and two assists.

At 6'8, he'll be required to stretch the floor in the NBA, and he's shown the capability to do that. The question will be if he can stay with other long and athletic wing players defensively.

About UConn in 2025-26

Now 12-1 on the campaign, the Huskies haven't played since beating DePaul on Dec. 21. They'll resume Big East play on Wednesday night in a New Years Eve showdown with Xavier at 5 p.m. ET in Cincinnati. Once that game happens, the Huskies will be in the flow of a regular schedule, playing between two and three league games per week.

Ranked No. 4 nationally right now, the Huskies have all the makings of a potential No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament, and they could look like a potential championship team, especially as Solo Ball returns to the lineup.

After the coaching switch from Jim Mora to Jason Candle, the Huskies could experience much changeover, and we recently chronicled how a portal rivalry could develop with Syracuse of all teams.

--The UConn women's basketball team, ranked No. 1 in the nation, will also play on New Year's Eve. They'll take on Providence at 3 p.m. ET. The Huskies are unbeaten.
