Congratulations are in order for University of Connecticut quarterback Joe Fagnano, who was named a semi-finalist for the Davey O'Brien Award on Wednesday. That award goes to the nation's best quarterback.
As was noted by UConn Roundtable on Tuesday:
"Fagnano is drawing the attention of scouts, too. After all, he is second in the nation among FBS quarterbacks in passing yards (2,840), third in completions (236) and touchdown passes (25). Oh, and he's No. 1 in interceptions -- the fewest -- thrown. Zero.- From UConn writer Jami Leabow on Nov. 11.
As Season Winds Down, Attention Paid to Prominent Pair of Huskies Grows
Joe Fagnano and Skyler Bell have numbers that are among the best in the nation at their positions this season. The names of the UConn quarterback-wide receiver combo are becoming known.
The senior from Williamsport, Pa. has technically appeared in seven seasons of college football, playing four years at Maine and three years at UConn.
In his career, he's thrown for more than 10,000 cumulative yards. He's got 90 touchdowns vs. 17 interceptions and is a major reason why the Huskies are 7-3 with two regular season games left to play (vs. Air Force, at Florida Atlantic).
The following appears from a UConn press release:
Fagnano is joined on this year's semifinalist list by Luke Altmyer (Illinois), Bear Bachmeier (BYU), Byrum Brown (USF), CJ Carr (Notre Dame), Trinidad Chambliss (Ole Miss), Blake Horvath (Navy), Haynes King (Georgia Tech), Jayden Maiava (USC), Fernando Mendoza (Indiana), Darian Mensah (Duke), Drew Mestemaker (North Texas), Dante Moore (Oregon), Chandler Morris (Virginia), Diego Pavia (Vanderbilt), Marcel Reed (Texas A&M), Julian Sayin (Ohio State), Ty Simpson (Alabama), Brendan Sorsby (Cincinnati), and Gunner Stockton (Georgia).
The next step in the process will be to select the award's three finalists, who will again be chosen based on voting from the Davey O'Brien National Selection Committee as well as bonus ballots awarded from the second round of the Davey O'Brien Fan Vote.
The three finalists will be announced on Nov. 25 and the winner will be announced on Dec. 12, the day before the Heisman Trophy is given out.
